The head cashier of the Régnier company, Jacques Vogan rescues a young woman who was being mugged. He offers his hospitality to the girl named Adrienne, and the two fall in love. A childhood friend of Jacques', Henri Greyssac, a gambler, borrows FF15,000 from him which Jacques takes from the funds of his company. Henri promises to refund him the week after. Unfortunately, he disappears and Jacques is thrown in jail for 3 years. When he is freed, he finds Henri who kills him for fear of losing his honor. Adrienne, who attended the scene hidden away, is also wounded by a lost bullet in her wrist. From that point on, she wears a velvet scarf around it. With the help of a friend, the Count d'Angerville, she manages to enter high society where Henri now lives thanks to an inheritance. She seduces him and he asks her hand in marriage, which she accepts. She then reveals that she was Jacques' lover and torments Henri until he commits suicide. Adrienne finds comfort with her protector the Count.
Adrienne marries her lover's murderer to get revenge.
