Father Murphy is set late 1860s to 1870, very shortly after the Civil War. As Mae instructs the class on the Star Spangled Banner, she states that "the Army and the Navy even consider this to be the national anthem." However the Navy didn't recognize it until 1889, and that was for flag raising, not as a national anthem. It became the national anthem in 1931. See more »
