- Shortly after arriving in Calcutta, Rigodon and Tico are arrested and charged with desecrating the temple they were chased out of in Bombay.
- Rowan arrives at the Reform Club with news that Fog is now wanted not only in England, but in India as well. He hands Sullivan a cable which says Fog is being pursued in connection with an elephant theft, prompting Farrel to ask why Fog would steal an elephant. In reply, Wesson says that if Fog stole £55,000 in England, he is also capable of stealing an elephant in India.
Meanwhile, the travellers have almost reached Calcutta. Romy fears they may have missed the ship to Singapore and Hong Kong because Fog and the others stopped to rescue her, but Fog says he is more concerned about her safety. Though he doesn't think the Kali worshippers have followed them, he knows the only way Romy can avoid being recaptured is to leave India. At this point, Romy remembers the night she almost died on the funeral pyre. Back in the present, Fog assures her that she is safe now, and Rigodon and Tico promise to protect her.
When Fog and his companions arrive in Calcutta, they are greeted by Transfer, who is disguised as a British officer named Colonel Armstrong. Transfer claims he is acting on Corn's behalf and that someone is planning to attack them. As the local police (who have, along with Dix and Bully, been sent to apprehend Fog and his party) enter the station, Transfer ushers the travellers outside and leads them to the Ganges, where a small boat is moored directly opposite the Rangoon, the ship which will take them on the next stage of the journey. Transfer says he will row Fog and the others to the Rangoon, but while they are on the water he makes a hole in the boat and bails out. Fog attempts to plug the hole with his cane and tells Rigodon to start paddling while Tico and Romy try to get the water out of the boat. Presently, however, Fog realises they are not going to reach the Rangoon before they sink and has Rigodon turn the boat around and head for shore.
Moments after the travellers have made it to dry land, they are confronted by three local police officers, who seize Tico and Rigodon, unceremoniously bundling them into the back of a coach. Fog tells the frantic pair that he is going to see Calcutta's police commissioner to straighten this matter out and get them released. The coach then drives off, with Rigodon and Tico locked inside.
But when Fog and Romy arrive at the local police headquarters, the commissioner says he cannot release Rigodon and Tico as they are charged with sacrilege, a serious offence in India. He tells Romy that, as a native Indian, she should have explained about local customs. Even though she was not with Fog and his party when they passed through Bombay, Romy still blames herself for Rigodon and Tico's arrest, saying she should have warned them. Fog tells her not to worry, then tells the commissioner that, since Rigodon and Tico are his responsibility, he will defend them at their trial.
Later, as he and Rigodon wait for their trial, Tico consults his sun clock and discovers that there are only two hours until the Rangoon is due to set sail. Rigodon tells him that all they can do is hope Fog and Romy are on the ship, ready to sail away. Just then, two police officers come to fetch them, telling them it is time for their trial.
In the courtroom, the judge (a chimpanzee) calls the trial to order and the proceedings begin. Rigodon and Tico then learn that Fog is speaking in their defence and also learn that the complainants are the monks who chased them in Bombay. The judge tells Rigodon and Tico that they are charged with violating a temple, profaning a sacred cow and disorderly conduct. Rigodon tries to protest, but the judge silences him, then asks if he and Tico admit to these charges. Directed to do so by Fog, Rigodon and Tico confess and the judge sentences them to fifteen days in prison, much to the delight of Transfer, Dix and Bully, who are watching the trial. Grabbing hold of Bully, Dix says the length of the sentence will allow time for the arrest warrant from Scotland Yard to get through. Moreover, Fog would never leave India without Rigodon and Tico.
However, Fog then says that, while he agrees in principle with the sentence, he is prepared to post bail for his two companions. The judge imposes bail of £1000 for each defendant, adding that Rigodon and Tico may either serve the sentence, in which case Fog will get the money back when the fifteen days have expired, or not serve the sentence, in which case Fog will forfeit the money. Fog chooses the latter option and the judge decides the money should go to the monks whose temple Rigodon and Tico desecrated. Afterwards, the judge praises Fog's performance and apologises for delaying him and his party. He also returns Rigodon's hat, warning Rigodon to be more careful around sacred cows in future.
Consulting his watch, Fog discovers that there is still time to catch the Rangoon; the travellers then leave the court. Meanwhile, Dix is outraged that £2000 of what he believes to be stolen money has been given away, and he and Bully hurry after Fog and his party. The travellers leave India behind them as they begin their voyage to Singapore and Hong Kong.
