Ann Marie meets a young millionaire at the Department of Motor Vehicles. He develops a crush on her and starts pestering her with gifts and sumptuous meals. Roddy is quite the playboy, gadding about Manhattan, entertaining friends at the finest of restaurants (The Purple Peacock), picking up girls at the Department of Motor Vehicles (where his license has been suspended).
Thing is, Roddy is New York gay circa 1966. It's interesting to watch. I'm sure everyone in the cast was in on the joke; there's no chance anyone involved in the production didn't understand the actor's characterization. Most people watching now would think, "gay," and view his actions as trying to hire Ann Marie as a beard. I'm not sure what the vast majority of viewers thought in 1966.
