- An excellent short film on the life of a B-52 pilot in the Strategic Air Command. Filmed at Westover AFB in Chicopee, Massachusetts, the film shows Maj. McKay, a pilot, rising from bed at a modest home near Westover. After eating breakfast with his family he heads out to the Base on a small scooter having left the family car with his wife. Maj. McKay arrives on base and reminds himself he must be home to attend his daughter's piano recital. He joins his 5 man crew and they stop at the cafeteria for coffee. They then proceed outside into the New England winter cold where a 3 hour long preflight check is performed. With the check complete they roll the aircraft out to the runway. Stewart explains the speed the aircraft needs to reach at various checkpoints down the runway in order to successfully lift the plane off the ground. Timing and decision making are split second observations. having gained proper speed the aircraft lifts off the runway and the crew begins to perform a practice radar scored bombing run over Canada. The mission is 8 hours and 5000 miles. After a successful mission the crew is out of radio contact causing concern on base and at Maj. McKay's home. Radio contact is gained and the weather becomes a concern. Maj McKay needs to get home to see his daughter's recital. Luckily the weather clears and the crew land in darkness guided into the glide path by controllers using radar. Once on the ground the Major runs to his scooter and suffers two mechanical breakdowns enroute to the school. He abandons the scooter and runs the rest of the way, making it just in time to see his daughter perform. Major McKay and the other fathers are described as being tired, extremely tired. The film cuts to black.
