Gull Cottage is having electrical and plumbing problems. Mrs. Muir (Hope Lange) tells landlord Claymore (Charles Nelson Reilly) that she is willing to pay for the repairs. However, handymen won't stay to make the necessary repairs, with every little sound assumed as a ghost given the house's history of being haunted. Mrs. Muir blames Captain Gregg (Edward Mulhare) and he decides to move in with Claymore until the project is finished.
