Fairly fun mindless low budget horror comedy
31 January 2009 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

I was watching the third Witchboard film recently and slightly bemoaning the fact that Kevin Tenney didn't return to direct it, well, watching this recent effort it certainly seems like he doesn't have quite the same touch. Now this is fun effort certainly, but it doesn't have too much going for it besides a few laughs and some guilty pleasures. The plot is a little like Night Of The Creeps, with a meteor carrying a parasite that can take control of people and cause them to eat brains. A bunch of strangers get stuck in a cabin and have to survive the parasitic brain munching menace. Its not an original film by any means and certainly has nothing in the way of intelligence. The cast are all game and put up their best efforts, from Joshua Benton as a wisecracking escapee from the law, David Crane as his crazed, angry and idiotic buddy in handcuffs, Michelle Tomlinson as a man hating lesbian and others. The script is full of wisecracks, jokes and general sarcastic silliness and it isn't at all realistic, but Kevin Tenney has an undeniable knack for writing this sort of brainless, daft but funny dialogue, so it flows nicely and is often funny. Its just a shame that the production values are kinda low and the special effects are gruesome but dumb, so it can't quite attain the retro, 80's feel its clearly going for with its mindless, lowbrow approach. The characters are all one dimensional, drawn with the broadest strokes, and none are particularly likable. There is needless nudity from all the female cast more or less, but its not that interesting, a good effort to up the sleaze of the film but not too useful. This is a fair slice of dumb but fun antics all in all, but ultimately it doesn't have quite enough interest. Kevin Tenneys usual flair seems to be absent, with the only neat touches in the filming being some funny scene transitions. It has some fun bad taste and grue but it just isn't quite original or well made enough to impress much. Still, maybe worth a look for some braindead low budget entertainment.
