CITY DETECTIVE – Christmas Pardon – 1953

This is episode 3 of the 1953 to 1955 Police series, CITY DETECTIVE. Rod Cameron headlines as a Detective in a major U.S. city. The series ran for a total of 64 episodes. The series featured quite a few well-known actors in guest bits. These include, Hugh Beaumont, Whit Bissell, Marie Windsor, Carolyn Jones, Fess Parker, Angie Dickinson, Russell Johnson, Claude Akins, George Macready, Beverly Garland, Ann Savage and Lee Van Cleef.

This particular episode is set at Christmas.

In this episode, Detective Rod Cameron is sent out to have a word with just released from prison, Larry Dobkin. Dobkin has done a 12 year bit and has returned to town to reclaim his wife, Marg Chapman and daughter. The rub here is that Chapman has remarried and wants nothing to do with Dobkin. A further fly in the soup is that Chapman has married the lawyer, Walter Coy, who had defended Dobkin at his trial. Dobkin figures that Coy had flubbed his defence so he could take up with his wife.

Everyone is soon hot under the collar and serious violence is threatened by all. The possible deadly blow up is prevented by the daughter, Dolly Cooper. Cooper talks everyone into cooling down and getting with the holiday spirit.

This one is a real wishy-washy type episode that every series seemed to broadcast around Christmas time.

The series has that rushed, shot in 5 days look to it, which actually works in its favour. The clapboard sets etc give it a nice seedy look.
