- The travellers escape from the jungle, Romy deciding to go with them.
- Rowan tells Sullivan, who is in Rowan's office, that not only is Fog missing, Dix and Bully have disappeared as well. Hearing this, Sullivan retorts that Dix and Bully are useless as police investigators. Wesson and Ralph are also in Rowan's office; Ralph says the thing they should worry about is that something may have happened to Fog.
Meanwhile, as Fog and the others flee for their lives, Dix and Bully are making their way downriver on a makeshift raft when they find themselves surrounded by crocodiles. Later, having managed to outrun the Kali worshippers, the travellers stop for a rest by a river and lay Romy on the ground while they tend to her. At the same time, Tico turns his attention to Koa, who was hit by three arrows during the chase; the elephant's thick hide has protected him from serious injury, but he still bellows in pain when Tico pulls out the last of the arrows. Since Romy needs medical attention, Corn says she should be taken to Allahabad. Fog agrees, but adds that, since the travellers have no guide and no map, getting there will be difficult. Rigodon, however, says they have to try, as the alternative is staying where they are and waiting for the Kali worshippers to catch up with them.
Just then, the travellers hear a voice. At first, they think it is the Kali worshippers, but it turns out to be the guide, who is overjoyed to see Koa again. As the guide greets his elephant, Rigodon goes to confront him, accusing him of being a traitor who left the travellers stranded in the jungle. The guide denies it, saying he was knocked unconscious and woke to find Koa gone; he has been tracking Fog and his party for two days and nights. At first, Rigodon still doesn't believe him, but Fog says their previous guide was an impostor and this is Koa's rightful owner. Fog then asks the guide, who has recognised Romy, if he can escort him and his companions to Allahabad. The guide agrees, saying Allahabad is only a few miles away, and the travellers set off. During the trip, Romy regains consciousness.
When the travellers arrive in Allahabad, Fog hands £2000 to the guide as payment for escorting them. The guide says he doesn't deserve so much money and is content just to have Koa back, but Fog says he and his party would never have made it to Allahabad without the guide's help. Accepting the payment, the guide leaves with Koa.
With time to spare before they must catch the train to Calcutta, the travellers visit a local dressmaker, where Romy chooses a new gown. Later, in answer to questions from Fog and Corn, she says she comes from a family of merchants and is a princess only through her marriage to the raja. As a young girl, she was sent to England to be educated, but lost both her parents in a typhoid epidemic shortly after she arrived. On returning to India, she was forced to marry the raja, who claimed the marriage had been arranged by her parents to ensure her security. Then, when the raja (a worshipper of Kali) died, she was told she would have to die with him.
At this point, Romy starts to cry and Fog reassures her that the Kali worshippers will eventually stop looking for her; in the meantime, she will be under Corn's protection. Corn then tells Romy about Fog's attempt to travel around the world in eighty days and Romy asks if she can accompany Fog and his party as far as Singapore, where her uncle and aunt live. She fears she will be recaptured if she stays in India. Corn agrees that this is the best solution and Fog sends Rigodon to the train station to purchase another ticket to Calcutta.
Later, the travellers continue their journey by train, parting company from Corn when the train stops in Benares. Corn asks Fog to call on him if he is ever in India again. Romy fears the delay caused by rescuing her may end up costing Fog the wager, but Tico tells her not to worry as the travellers were ahead of schedule when they crossed paths with her.
Elsewhere, Dix and Bully have managed to evade the crocodiles and have been picked up by a ferry going to Calcutta. Arriving in the city, they head for the local police headquarters, only to learn that the warrant still hasn't arrived. Not only that, they have been reported missing on duty and Calcutta's police commissioner (a dog) berates them for their incompetence. Just then, one of the officers (a monkey) comes in with news that monks from a religious order in Bombay are claiming that foreigners have desecrated their temple. Moments later, two of the monks from the temple Rigodon and Tico were chased out of enter the room, one of them carrying Rigodon's hat, which Dix recognises.
Back on the train, Fog asks Rigodon why he hasn't replaced his hat. In reply, Rigodon says his hat was so important to him that he has vowed never to replace it. Meanwhile, Transfer is plotting another "surprise" for Fog and his party.
