John C. Reilly created the character of Dr. Steve Brule. He brought his own wardrobe. The reading glasses were a pair that he bought at Rite Aid. "Brule" is a word that Reilly and his friends had created to refer to the feeling in one's stomach when drinking too much alcohol.

MTV was one of the few networks to pick-up Awesome Show. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim declined, due to MTV's decision to take the show in a pop culture-oriented route.
In the greenscreen segments, Eric Wareheim could sometimes been seen with his legs in awkward positions. This is because that the studio had a low ceiling, and Eric is six feet, six inches tall, so he often had to crouch to avoid hitting his head. He also had to sometimes put his head in awkward positions to avoid the studio lights' glare in his eyeglasses.
