In detective, suspense, and noir films or books, a MacGuffin is any thing the pursuit of which drives the plot. Examples include the black bird statue in The Maltese Falcon (1941), the Golden Fleece in Jason and the Argonauts (1963) and the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). The MacGuffin simply gives the characters motivation.
