The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Seth Rogen: 'Green Hornet is a douchebag'

28 December 2010 7:18 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Seth Rogen has branded his character in The Green Hornet as "a douchebag". The Pineapple Express star plays debonair newspaper publisher Brett Reid in the forthcoming action movie, a character that he describes as possessing less than admirable qualities throughout his transformation into the titular superhero. He told Virgin Media: "No, he's not a hero in any way that you would expect him to be a hero, in any way, shape or form. He's really not that awesome when you meet him, I have to say. "He's kind of a douchebag. A somewhat entertaining douchebag, but a douchebag all the same." Rogen, who also wrote the movie's (more) »

James Franco on What Interested Him About Starring in Caesar: Rise of the Apes

26 December 2010 6:39 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

James Franco's acting resume contains a bewildering mixture of big budgeted event movies (the Spider-Man trilogy), Oscar-winning dramas (Milk), stoner comedies (Pineapple Express) and unexpected TV appearances (General Hospital and 30 Rock). While doing press for his new movie, 127 Hours, a biography drama about Aron Ralston, the adventurer who was forced to amputate his own arm in order to stay alive, Franco said that "all you can control, as an actor, is who you decide to work with and how hard you work at the role and that’s about it." It was the opportunity to work with Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle that made Franco sign on to 127 Hours. Likewise, Franco recently told FlicksAndBits that the people involved with Caesar: Rise of the Apes are what made him decide to star in the modern day prequel to the Planet of the Apes movies.

Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

“Your Highness” Looks Pretty Awesome!

23 December 2010 10:09 AM, PST | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

More often than not a project sounds too good to be true. The cast is the great, the director is the great and most importantly, the premise for the project sounds great. Yet eight to eleven months, this once promising project sinks like a stone (I’m looking at you, Due Date). Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Your Highness.

Your Highness stars Danny McBride, Zooey Dechanel and future Oscar nominees James Franco and Natalie Portman….good cast. David Gordon Green, the man behind All The Real Girls and Pineapple Express directed it and most importantly, “Eastbound & Down” creators McBride & Ben Best wrote it. On paper, it sounds like a hit and look at that cool poster.

However, let’s check out the trailer and make the final verdict:

It looks pretty awesome. Pretty out there. Pretty wacky. Most importantly though, the trailer seems to hide the bigger and better laughs. »

Natalie Portman and James Franco Get Their Quest on in Your Highness

22 December 2010 8:10 AM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

We all know Christmastime can be stressful...the crowds, the travel, the search for the perfect gift. It all starts to add up. Fortunately, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Danny McBride (Pineapple Express, Eastbound & Down) are here to take the load off with the trailer for their new comedy, Your Highness—and since it's from the director of Pineapple Express, you know that title isn't a reference to majesty. Franco's ladylove (Zooey Deschanel) has been kidnapped by an evil wizard, and it's up to him and his brother (McBride) to rescue her. It's easy to tell who's more suited for the dangers of questing (hint: it's Franco), but fortunately, the brothers meet up with a sexy, »

‘Your Highness’ Trailer & Poster: Swords, Shields and Silliness

22 December 2010 7:54 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Question of the day: what do you get when the director of a stoner action/comedy flick teams up with Eastbound & Down‘s Kenny Powers to make an intentionally silly medieval adventure that features fantastical creatures and Natalie Portman doing her best Xena: Warrior Princess impersonation? The answer is Your Highness.

An official green band trailer and poster are now out for this flick, which reunites Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green with James Franco for a movie that looks a bit more like a humorous action pic than a flat-out parody in the style of Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Here’s an official description of the premise for Your Highness:

Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a ...

Drive Angry 3D UK Trailer Is Prime Cage Rage!

22 December 2010 4:43 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

I love it when Nicolas Cage is let loose on screen. I mean really let loose. Sometimes you get genuinely brilliant craziness in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and sometimes you get just plain crazy like The Wicker Man. But for me, even in the latter he’s bloody entertaining.

He’s back again here in Drive Angry and all the hallmarks of a the lunatic Cage are there, the twitchy overacting and funny wig, etc – but this time you get to see him do it in three dimensions, for what looks like a ‘leave your brain in the lobby’ supernatural actioner. Check out the craziness of the best Grindhouse trailer that was not attached to Rodriguez/Tarantino’s movie below…

First Image of Jonah Hill from the Set of The Sitter

21 December 2010 7:11 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Director David Gordon Green is just about to wrap shooting on The Sitter, which means we're due for the first image from the set of star Jonah Hill in costume.  Hill plays a college dropout who agrees to babysit three mischievous children, played by Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are), Kevin Hernandez, and Landry Bender.  The night takes a turn for the worse when Hill loses the cocaine of drug dealers of Sam Rockwell and J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), leading Hill and his charges on a chase through New York City. The Sitter opens on July 15, 2011.  Hit the jump to check out the image. Okay, so the image itself isn't particularly mind blowing. But it's early days. At least now we know Hill's character wears dorky glasses and sports the old t-shirt/lumberjack shirt/hooded jacket combo. If I'm honest, Hill hasn't really split my sides with laughter since Superbad. »
