Before the Hellcats were made and put to use, the Japanese were dominating the War in the Pacific thanks, in part, to their terrific Zero fighters. The Zero was mightier than the Allies' Wildcat aircraft and was ruling the skies over that vast ocean.
But, when the "Hellcat" made it into action, the tide turned. This airplane was superior in almost every phase. All of this is explained in detail on this show. Both sides had great pilots, so what the airplanes could and could not do, was the key.
This episode highlights some of the key battles of the Pacific. They are explained by experts and historians, are aided by some real footage, and are recalled by some of the pilots, heroes who are still alive and tell us what it was like. What makes each airplane great is also detailed. The key seemed to be which plane could climb faster and longer in the skies and which had more range.
Also computer graphics re-create the action. That is done fantastically. It doesn't look hokey and gives excitement to the presentation. I think these graphics are the key to making this hour interesting. It brings history to life.
This was my first look at this program and I was impressed with its production values.
