A girl with the supernatural ability to see through other peoples' lies, falls in love with a mysterious boy who always tells the truth.

For as long as she could remember, Dakota Skye has been cursed with a super power. She has the ability to see the truth in any lie she hears. From small, harmless white lies, to the more devious kind, they have come from the people that she should trust the most; her family, friends and teachers. These lies have snowballed, leading to her becoming bitter and apathetic towards the world around her. Now seventeen, Dakota just watches the world happen around her, unmotivated to join it. She has a boyfriend who plays in a semi-popular local rock band and her best friend from childhood, but finds little joy in her own life. One day, Jonah comes into town. It only takes a few days before Dakota notices something about him that sets him apart from the other people in her life. He doesn't lie. Through her friendship with Jonah, her eyes are opened to the world around her and she sees that there is something out there more than all the lies. There is a possibility of something different... something better. If only he wasn't her boyfriend's best friend. Now she must make a choice. Can she go back to the apathy that has dictated her life, ignoring something potentially amazing? Can she take the leap into the unknown with Jonah, ignoring all the repercussions that may come from that decision? Is he really the person that she thinks he is and wants him to be? The only thing that becomes clear is that Dakota can no longer be a spectator in her own life. She has to look at her life as it was, is and could be and make a choice for the first time.—John Humber

For as long as she could remember, Dakota Skye (Eileen Boylan) has been cursed with a superpower. She has the ability to see the truth in any lie she hears. From small, harmless white lies to the more devious kind, they have come from the people that she should trust the most; her family, friends and teachers. She was like this when she was little and could tell that her dad dressed as Santa Claus. At class she knew that nobody knows who discovered America, when they taught that Columbus discovered it. She knew that her mother (Carol Woodburn) was lying when she said that Dakota's dad was going to be OK in the hospital, when he was going to die soon. She lost her virginity to a guy named Jacob (Bay Dariz), who said he loved her, when he didn't. These lies have snowballed, leading to her becoming bitter and apathetic towards the world around her. Dakota's mother is travelling on account of work very frequently, and hence Dakota is mostly by herself on many occasions.

Now 17, Dakota just watches the world happen around her, unmotivated to join it. She has a boyfriend Kevin (J.B. Ghuman Jr.) who plays in a semi-popular local rock band & lies to her during sex (he says he loves Dakota, but he only loves sex). Kevin forces Dakota to attend a party where Jacob is attending, even when Dakota did not want to go.

Her best friend from childhood Beth (Dominique Generaux) who is planning her future but finds little joy in her own life. Beth lies to Dakota all the time, but they remain friends as they have been for 12 years. Beth wants Dakota to study for the SATS. Beth says Dakota is pulling in a C Average in class and spends all of her time with Kevin. Heather (Calico Cooper) is the waitress at Jim's where Kevin and Dakota hang out all the time. Kevin has a crush on Heather. Denise (Destiny Hyden) and Amy (Rebecca Sowell) are in Beth's SATS study circle.

One day, Jonah (Ian Nelson) comes into town. Jonah is an actor from New York. It only takes a few days before Dakota notices something about him that sets him apart from the other people in her life. He doesn't lie. Through her friendship with Jonah, her eyes are opened to the world around her, and she sees that there is something out there more than all the lies. Jonah says that he doesn't have a girlfriend as he hasn't met someone who fills him with energy. Dakota tests Jonah asking him about porn. Jonah admits that he watches porn and says that for guys porn is functional and not entertainment. He admits to masturbating frequently as well. Jonah takes Dakota out for trips to isolated locations where one can be in touch with oneself. Dakota tells him about how she likes cigarettes, 70s music, and boys with pink in their lips. Jonah mentions that he got a 1350 on his SATS. Jonah is good friend of Kevin but admits to her that he likes her.

Beth continues to needle Dakota about missing their SATS preparation sessions, but Dakota says that they are not real friends and are only together since they made friendship bracelets for each other in the 3rd grade. Dakota believes that Beth hangs around her, as it makes her feel good about herself.

After a lot of thinking, Dakota asks Jonah to pick her up & take her for a long drive. They end up kissing at the Grand Canyon. Dakota is feeling guilty about cheating on Kevin, but Dakota explains it as a dream for one day (and nothing that they do will count in the waking world) that they can share together without feeling guilty. Dakota has to clarify to Jonah that she is not looking to date older guys due to daddy issues. She had a father and lost him to cancer. That night they have sex, but Jonah is not happy as he feels he is betraying his best friend and almost brother. The next day Dakota is forced to lie to Kevin when he asks where she was the whole day previously. Dakota also realizes that for some reason she is not picking up Jonah's lies & she finds out about them later via idle conversation. Kevin claims that Jonah did not quit the band, they kicked him out as he was not good at it.

So, when Jonah says I Love You to Dakota, all she says back is "How do I know". Then Beth comes & tells Dakota that she knows about Jonah & her & that Dakota should not wait for Jonah to leave town (as he is only a temporary visitor) and that Dakota should make the choice for her life on her own. Jonah leaves town as he was supposed to & that night Dakota breaks up with Kevin. Over time Beth becomes Kevin's girlfriend.

Dakota takes her driving test to get a license & then drives all the way to NYC to hook up with Jonah after graduating from high school.
