‘Once’ Helmer John Carney to Direct Steve Carell in ‘Dogs of Babel’

3 November 2011 1:00 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Steve Carell has been slowly transitioning toward more dramatic roles ever since he quit The Office to focus on his rising film career, but some of his choices have sounded a bit questionable, at least on paper. One of the stranger ones he's been attached to [2] is the lead in The Dogs of Babel, an adaptation of Carolyn Parkhurst's debut novel. The premise of the story -- a grieving man tries to teach his dog to speak -- is so aggressively quirky that it's easy to see how the film could veer away from heartfelt toward silly or schmaltzy. So it's something of a relief to hear that Mandate Pictures has tapped a guy who may actually be able to pull off that tough balancing act: Once director John Carney. More details after the jump. The Hollywood Reporter [3] writes that Carney has just finalized a deal to helm the movie, »

Ever since he's left The Office, Steve Carell's movie career has grown busier than ever. One of his upcoming projects is the drama Dogs of Babel, which he's been attached to star in since February. Now the production is one step closer to going before cameras as John Carney has been hired to direct. Most people will recognize Carney's name from the indie hit Once from a few years back, although he has also recently wrapped filming on another film called The Rafters. With Carell, he'll tell the story of a linguistics professor who, in an effort to learn more about his wife's death, attempts to teach his dog to speak since the canine was present at the time of her death. Dogs of Babel Gets Director John Carney

2 November 2011 5:09 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Once filmmaker John Carney has signed on to direct Dogs of Babel for Mandate Pictures. We first reported on this project back in February, when Steve Carell came aboard to produce and star in the drama.

Jamie Linden wrote the screenplay, which is adapted from Carolyn Parkhurst's novel of the same name. The story centers on Paul Iverson (Steve Carell), a linguistics professor who comes home one day to find his wife dead in their back yard. Although the police rule the death an accident, Paul is still skeptical. He tries to teach his dog Lorelei, the only witness to his wife's death, how to speak, in hopes of determining what really happened that day.

Steve Carell is producing Dogs of Babel alongside Mandate Pictures president Nathan Kahane, David Heyman, Corey May, and M. Dooma Wendschuh. It isn't known when production may begin on Dogs of Babel.

‘Once’ Helmer John Carney Directing Steve Carell Drama ‘The Dogs of Babel’

2 November 2011 3:28 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Once hit theaters in 2007, and discounting Zonad, that’s too long for John Carney to not make another film. When someone crafts a movie as beautiful and entertaining as his semi-musical, you immediately want his next work to hit theaters. He has The Rafters ready to open next year, while this summer brought news of a big project for him: Can A Song Save Your Life?, a Judd Apatow-produced musical that has Scarlett Johansson lined up to star.

24Frames now reports that Carney is in final talks to take on The Dogs of Babel, which has already landed Steve Carell for the lead role. Based on Carolyn Parkhurst‘s novel, the story follows “a professor who tries to coax his dog to speak out about the death of the professor’s wife, to which the canine was the only witness.” I’ve said it before and I’ll say »

Once Director John Carney to Direct Steve Carell in Dogs Of Babel

2 November 2011 2:30 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

John Carney's Once is a gem that has continued to grow a devoted audience since the film's release in 2006.  It's a movie that gets better every time I see it and Carney wisely lets his actors/musicians take center stage rather than overwhelm the intimate story with his direction.  Carney has directed two more European films since Once, and 24 Frames reports that he'll be making his stateside debut for the dramedy Dogs of Babel.  As we reported back in February, Steve Carell is set to play a linguistics professor who finds his wife dead in their backyard.  Grief-stricken by his wife's death and unable to accept the police's ruling that it was an accident, the professor tries to teach their dog to speak in order to discover the truth.  With Once, Carney showed he could blend the comic and the melancholy to beautiful effect and he seems like a wise choice for this film. »

'Once' Director John Carney to Helm 'Dogs of Babel' with Steve Carell

2 November 2011 2:04 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Now that the former star of "The Office" doesn't have to worry about the NBC comedy series filling up his schedule, there are plenty of films with Steve Carell on the way. From Burt Wonderstone pitting him against Jim Carrey to a new drama called Foxcatcher that has him shooting Channing Tatum to death, and even another project with the directors of Crazy, Stupid, Love, it looks like Carell will be quite busy over the next few years. Now 24 Frames reports a project we heard about last February, an adaptation of Dogs of Babel that Carell will produce and star in, has now landed Once director John Carney to helm the film. Based on Carolyn Parkhurst's novel, the story follows a linguistics professor (Carell) who discovers his wife dead in the backyard. Though the police rule the woman's death an accident, the professor is not convinced. Deducing that the »

John Carney May Tame Dogs Of Babel

2 November 2011 1:30 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

When music-fuelled romantic drama Once hit it big back in 2006, you might have expected writer/director John Carney to be snapped up to direct some work on some Hollywood project starring a big name. But instead, he opted to handle a remake of his own comedy short Zonad before switching tracks for supernatural drama The Rafters. Now, though, he might be on to a bigger job, entering final negotiations to direct Dogs Of Babel. We talked about the project back in February, when Steve Carell first became attached. Don’t go worrying that this is going to be some huge action comedy, though: Dogs is a rather more maudlin drama about a linguistics professor investigating his wife’s death. You see, while the police consider her death an accident, Paul Iverson (Carell) thinks otherwise. And with the couple’s dog Lorelei the only living witness to the incident, Iverson begins »
