The film was originally announced in 2005 as a sequel to Cannibal Holocaust (1980) until Ruggero Deodato clarified that it was intended to be a companion piece. When Relevant Entertainment acquired the rights to the film in early 2007, it was misinterpreted that the company was producing a remake, causing a stir in the horror community. The projects were eventually identified as being one in the same.
