The gang has agreed to help their professor in the anthropology department. He introduces them to the 3000-year-old mummy of Anka; but a dour Arab named Dr. Najib warns them of a legend that says the mummy will come back to life and turn to stone anyone responsible for removing him from his tomb. The kids go to the malt shop for liverwurst-and-ice cream sandwiches; but when they return, they see a stone statue of their professor. The curse seems to have come true. Soon they're being chased by the mummy, who demands the rare coin that Shaggy had accidentally pocketed. But an ancient mummy is no match for Scooby Doo and the meddling teenage sleuths. Scooby Doo, Where Are You!

S1E12: Scooby-Doo and a Mummy, Too (1969)

The gang are hanging out with a friend at the anthropology department when they get a first hand look at a new mummy. Soon they hear about a possible curse and before long the mummy is missing and several people are turned to stone. Now the gang must see what's really going on. This here is another major winner as we get all sorts of great horror elements and of course some terrific characters to bring everything to life. Once again a strong villain is needed for an episode to work and the mummy is exactly that. The actual look of the mummy is terrific but his moans are just as effective. There are many good scenes of chases involving our heroes including a great one involving a saw. Another major plus is that the story itself is actually very good and especially the entire bit with the turning into stone. There's a great atmosphere running throughout the episode that helps make this one of the best in the series.
