Storyline

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd is invited by Dr. Sandor Halvorson to join his team who have found something extraordinary. Deep below the Arctic ice, they have found an alien spacecraft that has been there for perhaps 100,000 years. Not far from where the craft landed, they find the remains of the occupant. It's cut out of the ice and taken back to their camp but as the ice melts, the creature reanimates and not only begins to attack them but manages to infect them, with team members devolving into the alien creature. Trivia

The producers convinced Universal Studios to allow them to create a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) instead of a remake, as they felt Carpenter's film was already perfect, so making a remake would be like "painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa". However, the prequel still has the title of the original film, because they couldn't think of a subtitle (for example, "The Thing: Begins") that sounded good. See more »

Goofs

When Kate Loyd is inspecting the mouths of her colleagues for fillings she appears to be using an LED flashlight which did not exist in 1982. It was not an LED flashlight. It does look like the beam from the light is touched up with special effects to make it more apparent, but this is not a goof. See more »

Perfect companion piece to the original!
2 October 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

This film is awesome...it brings back good old fashioned horror and suspense.John Carpenter should be proud.Director,Henninggen pays homage to Carpenter without replicating the original films essence but bringing something new yet familiar. The performances are strong and Winstead solidifies her legendary status in fan boy and geek worlds by continually picking projects that showcase her talent while not compromising her integrity.Edgerton has been on a streak with another fantastic performance.Beltrami's score is nostalgic while refreshing. This film is a perfect companion piece to Carpenter's film.Solid filmmaking!
