What It Takes to Write ‘The Tonight Show’ (And The Writers’ 5 Favorite Sketches)

24 June 2016 11:20 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

To appreciate how much work goes into writing a show like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” ask a writer how many jokes they must write on any given day for any given segment. The answer is easily dozens, and that doesn’t include comedy pitches for celebrity guests and big sketch ideas like the show’s famed TV show parodies.

Gerard Bradford, a supervising writer for “Tonight Show,” broke down for IndieWire just how intense the production process can be. He also revealed some of his favorite sketches from the past year, and their more unusual inspirations.

What does having a regular schedule for specific desk bits like “Thank You Notes” mean for the rhythm of writing the show?

It definitely helps – especially on a show like ours where we’re doing five hour-long shows a week, and each show can be very different content-wise on any given day. »

Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin Want To Release More Than One Season of ‘Grace and Frankie’ a Year

24 June 2016 7:58 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Lily Tomlin isn’t feeling well.

Sitting in her trailer on the Paramount lot, the Emmy-winning actress has a cold that would be more than enough for this weak-willed critic to call in sick. But instead, she’s only taking a break — a short break that she’s using to talk about “Grace and Frankie.”

Next to Tomlin, rubbing her back and offering assistance in any way possible, is her Oscar-winning friend and co-star, Jane Fonda. The two acting icons, sitting side by side on a cozy L-shaped couch, just released the new season of their Netflix hit a few days earlier, and they’re already deep into shooting Season 3. Considering the grueling 16-hour shoot days, it’s no surprise anyone would be feeling a bit tired. But all these two are thinking about is making more.

Fonda and Tomlin both want more “Grace and Frankie” — more seasons, more often. »

Queen Of The South Season 1 Review

23 June 2016 4:43 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

“I’ve been poor and I’ve been rich,” Teresa Mendoza, the eponymous queen of USA’s new drama Queen of the South, says in the opening shot of the show. As she does a line of coke, after emerging from her private helicopter and into her posh mansion, she admits pretty much what you expect she will post-Breaking Bad: “Rich is better.” It’s also deadlier (you probably expected that, too). Out of nowhere, a bullet breaks the window of her not-private-at-all private bathroom, she gets hit in the gut, and divulges – via voiceover – that a little backstory might be helpful.

As such, much of Queen of the South is Teresa’s (Alice Braga) pre-“Queenpin” days, wherein we see her snuggling up to a cute Texan drug smuggler, becoming gal pals with a wife of a cartel member, and »

Damon Lindelof On ‘The Leftovers’ Final Season, Michael Lombardo’s Legacy, Endurance Of ‘Lost’ & What’s Next

23 June 2016 2:44 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

"I think that The Leftovers has carved out a space in the zeitgeist that's much more culty, it's a much smaller, impassioned audience," Damon Lindelof says of the HBO series that has come off an acclaimed second season and is heading toward its third and final season. "And so, I don't feel the pressure that say a Breaking Bad or a Game Of Thrones or a Lost or Walking Dead feels, when they're ending seasons or series,” the showrunner adds of how his finale might be… »

Spider-Man: Homecoming Adds Bokeem Woodbine As Yet Another Villain

23 June 2016 2:19 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The casting announcement situation on Spider-Man: Homecoming is spiralling out of control, with multiple new additions to the star-studded ensemble joining every few hours. While most of the actors attached to the webhead’s new solo outing have likely been involved for some time, it’s only now that the trades are getting the intel.

With that being said, following on from news that Breaking Bad-Better Call Saul actor Michael Mando had signed up, Bokeem Woodbine is now confirmed to be part of the film as well.

Specifics on who he’s set to play are, as expected, being kept under wraps, but THR suspects that Woodbine won’t be on the side of the good guys. He’s expected to be teaming up with the movie’s prolific roster of villains that so far includes Michael Keaton and PrometheusLogan Marshall-Green. That pairing are rumored to be »

Why ‘Mr. Robot’ Rewards a Re-Watch and What It Says About Modern Culture

23 June 2016 1:43 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

I’ve spent part of the summer re-watching the first season of “Mr. Robot,” an activity I highly recommend. Audacious and inspiring in the first go-round, the second time through, it’s a richer and more affecting experience. The amount of planning that went into the debut season, which is on Amazon Prime, is even more impressive on repeat viewing, but “Mr. Robot” is never a soulless puzzle-box of a show — far from it.

Mr. Robot” is the first TV drama to seriously and systematically explore the pitfalls of our interconnected age, and yet it’s not just about the omnipotence of the Internet and the rise of of the surveillance state. Many plot turns involve those elements, but creator Sam Esmail uses them to complicate and amplify the dilemmas of the characters, who are frequently mesmerizing in their charismatic or eccentric individuality.

'Spider-man: Homecoming' Locks Down 'Better Call Saul' Talent Michael Mando

22 June 2016 7:58 PM, PDT | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Marvel Studios and Sony have locked down yet another actor for their upcoming film Spider-man: Homecoming, the first standalone film from Spidey since the disappointing Amazing Spider-man 2, which effectively ended that franchise, as well as prematurely put a capper on a planned Sinister Six film. Awareness for Homecoming has definitely had a recent spike. The film is in production, and with that have come an onslaught of announcements regarding the cast. In fact, we only just had two more confirmed actors this morning, and now, we already have yet another actor on board for the flick.

According to THR, actor Michael Mando has joined in on the reboot. As per usual, we have no details regarding who this actor will be playing. Mando is probably best known at the moment for his role as the indimidating Nacho Varga in the Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul.

We know Bryan Cranston best for “Breaking Bad,” and in his upcoming movie “The Infiltrator” he takes on another crime-filled role. The drama is based on federal agent Robert Mazur’s attempts to penetrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking ring and bring down the notorious Colombian kingpin in the 1980s. Mazur (Cranston) goes undercover as a money-laundering businessman named Bob Musella and eventually befriends the so-called King of Cocaine’s right hand man, Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). Damon Lindelof on Perfect Finales and How to End ‘The Leftovers’ Season 3 (Consider This)

22 June 2016 1:26 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Endings come with expectations, and Damon Lindelof is very aware of the bar set for the final season of “The Leftovers.” As he now crafts the show’s remaining episodes, Lindelof recently told IndieWire, “When Season 2 ended, a lot of prominent, very smart people in your field were like, ‘I’m good.’ And there was a part of us that was like, ‘Shit, should we just end it? Why continue?'”

Thankfully, they chose to keep going, but what comes next for “The Leftovers” will be measured against the widely-acclaimed brilliance of what’s come before. Among many Top 10 lists and other accolades, Season 2 of “The Leftovers” landed a Television Critics Association Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, just as Emmys voting is underway. Discussion was feverish as the episodes aired, and Lindelof is well aware of the high-regard held for his creation.

Person of Interest Season 5 Finale Review – ‘Return 0’

Ricky Church reviews the season 5 finale of Person of Interest

Moments make up our lives. Whether they are big moments or small moments, we can always recall one particular moment out of a memory. Final moments in particular are something we always remember and play a huge part in how we look back at something. For television series this is most especially true as the ending of a series either secures or damages its legacy. We’ve seen this a number of times in the last few years with shows such as Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Battlestar Galactica and Lost. It is fitting, then, that final moments were a central theme in Person of Interest’s series finale.

Though Finch effectively crippled Samaritan in the previous episode with his Ice-9 virus, the AI was making one more desperate attempt to survive and wipe out Finch and his cohorts. The tension »

Power Rangers Movie Poster Brings Together Angel Grove’s Finest

22 June 2016 7:41 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Now that Godzilla and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has been instated as the Rangers’ mentor, Zordon, Lionsgate is quietly beginning to jump-start its promotional campaign for Power Rangers, the live-action spectacle that is booked in for a theatrical release in early 2017.

We’re still a ways away from clocking eyes on some footage, given that Dean Israelite’s (Project Almanac) feature just wrapped principal photography late last month; even still, the film’s first teaser poster has surfaced via Twitter, bringing together Angel Grove’s unassuming heroes under a breathtaking skyline.

Featuring all five of Lionsgate’s Rangers in civvies, our fresh-faced heroes stand tall directly below that famed lightning bolt, this time painted in a constellation of stars. It’s a fairly effective teaser, teeing up both the movie’s sci-fi elements along with the everyday teenagers destined for greater things – “Together we are more.”
