Austin Film Fest: Comedy Stands Out With ‘The Kitchen,’ ‘It’s a Disaster’ and ‘Ex-Girlfriends’

23 October 2012 7:00 PM, PDT | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The first five days of the 2012 Austin Film Festival have been a challenging frame. For a festival with such a rich history and strong commitment to promoting the work of great storytellers, the overall line-up has been anything but noteworthy. The fest’s biggest (and arguably best) film, Silver Linings Playbook, is an obvious stand-out. But I’ll have more on that later. For now, we’re going to take a look at three comedies that have emerged as clear reasons why there’s hope for the Austin Film Festival programming staff. While much of the rest of their line-up underwhelms, they’ve provided their audience with a number of gems, all of which are sure to make us laugh. The Kitchen That 70s Show starlet Laura Prepon takes the lead in what could be director Ishai Setton’s breakout work. She plays Jennifer, a burgeoning art gallery curator whose thirtieth birthday begins with a messy breakup »

Easy and Cheap Way to Recreate Famous Movie Scenes

29 September 2012 2:33 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Ghostbusters (1984)

Here's an awesome series of photos that recreate famous movie scenes using screen grabs, a cheap printer, a keen eye for movie locations and some fairly steady hands. They were taken by Christopher Moloney, a writer for the show OutFront on CNN. These are just part of the over 200 locations he's shot so far, most of which were taken on his walk to work from his home on East 75th Street and First Avenue to Columbus Circle

It all started out with the photo above, which features a scene from Ghostbusters with Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. He started out taking these photos with his BlackBerry and sharing them only with family and friends. He has since upgraded his camera and gained worldwide attention from your average teenager to movie aficionados.

As his FILMography tumblr has become more popular across the globe, he's had the opportunity to go international with his photos as well. »

Kate Hudson Is Going to Make the Most of This Glee Appearance

10 September 2012 11:30 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Professionally, it has been a rocky few years for Kate Hudson, who spiraled down from the critically reviled Bride Wars and Nine into a cancer rom-com that required her to dance at her own New Orleans jazz funeral while Whoopi Goldberg–as-God looked on. (Retroactive A Little Bit of Heaven spoiler alert. Sorry.) She's in kind of a reset phase career-wise, and as such has scheduled a three-episode arc on Glee, to remind audiences she can do more than sit on a fluffy dream sequence cloud and ponder the meaning of love. (That also happened in A Little Bit of Heaven. It was quite the film.) Below is early clip from Hudson's guest run — she plays an instructor at Nyada, Rachel's fancy new art school — and though it's only a three-minute dance sequence, this much is clear: Kate Hudson is trying. The Opposite Trajectories of Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway

26 July 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The year is 2003, the scene is any movie theater in America: Kate Hudson, the sunny, free-spirited star of Almost Famous and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, is the ruling rom-com queen, while Anne Hathaway is almost exclusively known as “the girl from The Princess Diaries.” Fast-forward six years to Bride Wars, in which Hudson and Hathaway meet, and oh, how things have changed: Hathaway’s star is rising, Hudson is in a rut, and their career trajectories are headed in opposite directions. By the time we arrive at 2012, the trade is complete: Hathaway ranks 61st on Vulture’s Most Valuable Stars List; Hudson does not rank at all. How to explain this total reversal of Hollywood fortune? Vulture now presents an in-depth analysis of the wildly divergent careers of Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, as a case study of the decisions, projects, and turns of luck required »

5 reservations I have for Nolan’s Dark Knight Rises

12 July 2012 7:35 AM, PDT | Shadowlocked | See recent Shadowlocked news »

Around two months ago I found myself at a press screening of Joss Whedon’s wonderful Cabin in the Woods; a film that, for me, will take some beating within the horror genre of 2012. However, half of my night’s entourage – two up and coming horror directors – were unimpressed, stating that they felt the film 'was flat with little to no imagination'.

Had they not seen the same film as myself? What more could writer-producer Whedon and writer-director Drew Goddard have done – heck, the guys had seamlessly infused horror and subtle comic timing, a stumbling block for many of the top directors. Anyhow, after further discussion we agreed to disagree…it was clear that both had sustained head-injuries at some point – possibly due to a butter-fingered nanny or an infantile love of stair parkour – but let’s not get bogged down with specifics…

Inevitably, film fanatics that we are, the »

Commenting on the critics with Simon Columb...

Betsy Sharkey writes for the La Times about foul language in mainstram cinema:

"Now, we head into summer, the prime time for big, bruising action flicks and lots of racy comic outrage and a grand opportunity for filmmakers to cross boundaries of taste on the language front. I'm bracing for what could well become a raging torrent of moviegoer disgust and distress, because despite what anyone claims about the modern acceptance of and appetite for language of the roughest, rawest, most graphic sort, the truth is that a huge contingent of the paying crowd objects to it still."
