Death of a comedian. Also the third last episode of The Last Detective
safenoe18 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is the third episode of season 5 of The Last Detective, and also the third last episode of the whole series sadly. The first three seasons each had four episodes, and season five had five episodes.

Here Dangerous investigates the murder of a stand-up comedian, who died on stage after drinking a glass of wine as part of his act with his comedy partner. It turns out the fatally poisoned comedian had several girlfriends on the go, one them played by Barbara Thorn, who was exemplary as Rita "Coop" Cooper, the trusty secretary to Judge John Deed in the series Judge Deed.

Mod has settled well in his house share with Dangerous and Julie, and their cute St Bernard wasn't feeling well. Poor dog.

I like the London atmosphere of The Last Detective...the gray skies, the shoulder-to-shoulder housing, the rain. Pub scenes abound in The Last Detective.

No laughing matter

Warning: Spoilers
A veteran double act Jules Rendell and Bunny Hopper bring their stage act to Wilsden, in all probability it's the same one they have been doing for decades, but they still have loyal fans some of whom unbelievably behave more akin to groupies.

Tragically for Bunny Hopper this gig transpired to be his very last laugh, sadly emulating the late much lamented comedy legend Tommy Cooper.

D. I. Aspinall is keen to brush it off as natural causes because of Hopper's age and life, and hassles D. C. Davies to simply dot the I's and cross the T's.

While D. S. Pimlot and D. C. Barrett find themselves remarkably seconded to the Met in a big people smuggling operation, which leaves them acting like juveniles who have just won the lottery.

When Bunny Hopper's demise proves less than straightforward D. C. 'Dangerous' Davies is left doing the actual routine police work around what becomes a case, a practice that he should by then of got used to as an all too regular occurrence.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Willesden

Two veteran club comics who once were on the cusp of stardom are now playing local clubs.

Bunny Hopper (Roy Hudd) is the funny one with an eye for the ladies. Jules Rendell (Russ Abbott) writes the gags but may not be an adept performer without Bunny.

When Bunny collapses and dies during the act. Dangerous Davies suspects foul play which is confirmed as it turns out that he was poisoned.

The suspects could be anyone in the club that night as the act included drinking a glass of wine, which had the poison.

To Dangerous surprise. Despite being married for some years, Bunny was a womaniser and the audience that night consisted of many of his lady friends. Some of them got involved in some aggro.

The story was appealing, it helped that two actual funny men played the characters. An ode to comedy acts that never made it big. It might be a bit hard to take Roy Hudd as a lothario.

I wonder if Dangerous had the last laugh as his boss is left with egg on his face. The rest of the team tackled a people smuggling racket.

Toby Jones has a minor role playing the club manager and compere.

Watching till the very last episode however it's getting a little tiiring the way dangerous keeps getting crapped on by the chief and the other 2 idiots. Dangerous is the only one worth anything. I would like to see him get some recognition. I do love Mod the dog and even the wife!
