Is it just me or are the MTV Movie Awards trying to be a little more respectable? Yeah, stuff like "Identity Thief" and "We're the Millers" picked up multiple nominations this morning, but prestige Oscar players "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" led the field with eight each, besting even "The Hunger Games." And Best Picture Oscar winner "12 Years a Slave" is in there for Movie of the Year. Color me surprised, that's all. No, no one around here is taking the MTV Movie Awards too seriously. I find myself endlessly fascinated by them, though, as a marker for, I don't know, youth progression? The "Twilight" years are thankfully behind us and we can all be happy for that (and boy was it a s**t-show for fans of that franchise when the final installment was mostly snubbed last year). The "Hunger Games" era doesn't seem to be so oppressive, »

Leonardo DiCaprio will get another shot at a best actor trophy, though this one will be in the shape of a golden bucket of popcorn: The actor is up for Best Male Performance at this year's MTV Movie Awards for his turn in Wolf of Wall Street. Of course, he'll have to go through Matthew McConaughey again, who's up for Dallas Buyers Club – the role he just won an Oscar for – though if DiCaprio plays his cards right he might pick up Best Shirtless Performance.
Tying Wolf for the most nods was American Hustle, »
The 2014 MTV Movie Awards were announced today and once again it's a grab bag of nominees, but this year is even more curious than most as the one film thought to be the most populist film of the lot, Gravity, comes away with only one nomination and that being for Sandra Bullock for Best Actress. Then you have the Movie of the Year category, which pits The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire against American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave. I don't know how the nominees are decided at the MTV Movie Awards, but I know the winners are supposedly determined by MTV viewers, which means, looking at this list, the Hunger Games crowd is likely to make a huge mark.... or, it could be the Leonardo DiCaprio crowd that became ever-so-vocal after he, predictably, lost Best Actor at the Oscars. »

Conan O'Brien will be serving up buckets of golden popcorn! The late night funnyman confirmed that he's hosting the MTV Movie Awards this year, announcing the big news Tuesday on "Conan." "Sitting here before me are some of the most prestigious awards an artist can receive: the Oscar, the Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the Screen Actor's Guild Award, the Peabody Award and, of course, the Nobel Peace Prize," the comedian said, sitting in front of some serious hardware. "People work their entire lives in an attempt to earn just one of these incredible awards. But if you ask me, they're all garbage!" he shouted, as he swept the awards off his desk. "Garbage! It's garbage!" Why? "There's only one award, one award in the world that truly matters. I'm talking about the MTV Movie Award."Judging from his excitement, we can't wait to see him host the big show! Conan O'Brien has been announced as the host of this year's MTV Movie Awards, set to air Sunday, April 13. It will be the late night talk show's first stint hosting the show. He hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2006. "After eight years of intense negations, I am honored to announce I am hosting MTV's second most prestigious awards show," O'Brien said. Last year's big winners were Marvels "The Avengers," which took home honors for Movie of the Year, Best Villain (Tom Hiddleston) and Best Fight. Oscar crossover came in the presence of films like Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" (winner of Best Wtf Moment) and David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook (Best Male Performance, Best Female Performance and Best Kiss). Nominations for this year's awards will be announced on Thursday. Britney Spears has been a woman of few spoken words lately, letting her biographical Britney Jean album communicate what's up in her world. Now she's turning to graphic clothing to share not-so-subtle messages. In a photo Brit tweeted this week, the singer clued us in on how she tells her boyfriend David Lucado to get to stepping. In other funny tweets, Chrissy Teigen showed off her hydrating bath-time ritual, Seth Myers discovered his hilarious billboard placement fail, and Kristen Bell is reeling with the effects of drinking for a scene. I could be Fallon in love. Ha, ha. But no, seriously. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, replacing jolly old Jay Leno and moving the former Late Night host up an hour on the NBC schedule, premiered Monday night, and it was a winner. It was charming. As it should have been: Fallon, 39, is almost pure charm. He's boyish, silly, modest, eager - emerging from the set's tall blue curtain, he bowed his head and for a moment looked like Jiminy Cricket, a small ambassador of good will. And he can dance, sing and do voices just well enough without ever doing them too well, »

Hope President Obama likes Kardashian punch lines, because it was announced today that Joel McHale will be hosting the White House Correspondents' Dinner. McHale will be the second host in a row to be taller than the president, following Conan O'Brien, who had the gig last year. The dinner, which will be celebrating the White House Correspondents' Association's centennial, will be held on May 3. No word on whom McHale will hire to help with his speech. Maybe Dan Harmon will come onboard to make the whole thing an American President parody. »

Conan O'Brien spoke with Martin Scorsese recently, getting right to the important questions regarding the director’s controversial new film The Wolf of Wall Street. No, it wasn’t about the Oscars or the exchange of open letters between Christina McDowell and Tom Prousalis (who worked closely with the real-life Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio). It was about… drugs. As you’ll see in this video, O’Brien asks the director about the “expert” who instructed DiCaprio about how to behave on Quaaludes. Most film nerds know that Scorsese struggled with drug use early in his career, and the director jokes that he had a little of his own experience to help inform his leading star. Apparently Scorsese was legally prescribed Quaaludes...

The haul for Scorsese's tale of 80s and 90s excess beat the $294m made by psychological thriller Shutter Island in 2010. The film is likely to continue pulling in cinemagoers if it triumphs at next month's Oscars, where Scorsese, star/producer Leonardo DiCaprio and co-star Jonah Hill are all up for prizes.
Success for The Wolf of Wall Street suggests the various controversies surrounding it – whether Scorsese's treatment amounts to a condoning of fraud, whether any animals were harmed in its making – have done little to damage the interest of cinemagoers. It is less certain whether the film's scenes of »
