The Way (review)

13 October 2011 8:10 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Is it possible to make a movie about religious faith -- why it works for some people, why it doesn’t for others -- that explicates the matter in ways that anyone can appreciate, even if they don’t agree with it? Can a movie about spirituality be inclusive rather than devisive? Yes: hell, yes. Writer-director Emilio Estevez (Bobby) has pulled it off with his very powerful and deeply moving The Way... and I say that as someone who is not at all religious, as someone who is actively disdainful of religion. Martin Sheen (Love Happens) is a mourning father who travels from California to France to collect the body of his adventurous son (Estevez himself, in a few brief yet touching flashbacks and grief-visions), who died in an accident at the beginning of the Camino de Santiago, an ancient 500-mile hike-slash-pilgrimage through rural France and into Spain. To honor his son, »

Comic Book Bites: The Spectre, The Goon, Hope Falls

19 September 2011 3:59 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

While the upcoming new broadcast season is unusually light on superpowered scheduling, Fox Television is helping to plug the gap by snapping up DC Comics property The Spectre.

Maybe not the first title to come to mind when asking what book should next make the jump to TV but, with Smallville ending and Wonder Woman failing before it began, DC is looking to regain its share of your couch-time.

According to Deadline, the show has a script commitment from the studio, tapping Brandon Camp (John Doe, Love Happens) for writing and producing duties and feature veteran Bill Gerber as an executive producer.

Possessing the resurrected spirit of a murdered cop, the Spectre serves as the avatar of vengeance, punishing the guilty and protecting the innocent. First appearing in 1940's More Fun Comics 52 - and co-created by Superman founding father Jerry Siegel - the character could offer a potentially dark and violent drama. »

Price: DVD $28.98, Blu-ray/DVD Combo $35.99

Studio: Warner Home Video

Charlie Day (l.), Jason Sudeikis (c.) and Jason Bateman come up with a devilish idea in Horrible Bosses.

Jason Bateman (Paul), Charlie Day (TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and Jason Sudeikis (Hall Pass) team up to achieve every employee’s dream of  getting rid of their superiors in the comedy movie Horrible Bosses, directed by Seth Gordon (TV’s Modern Family).

Looking at their situations, the idea doesn’t seem to be unreasonable: Management candidate Nick Hendricks (Bateman) has been slaving away under the tyranny of his supervisor Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey, American Beauty), only to find out there is no promotion in sight. Meanwhile, dental assistant Dale Arbus (Day) has been struggling to resist the overt advances of his sexpot boss, Dr. Julia Harris, D.D.S. (Jennifer Aniston, Love Happens). And accountant Kurt »

Exclusive: Fox has bought The Spectre, a drama series project based on the DC Comics superhero character co-created by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily. Brandon Camp (John Doe) will write the adaptation and executive produce with feature producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino). The Spectre, which has received a script commitment, centers on a former cop serving time in afterlife limbo who hunts down earthly criminals on behalf of the dead — and mortals soon to be dead if ultimate justice is not served. Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: July 8, 2011

Plot: Three friends plan on murdering their terrible bosses. Problems arise.

Who’S It For? It’s definitely R-rated, with raunchy language. The film is actually not that mean. I really expected it to be meaner.

Expectations: Well, I just told you some of my expectations. Day and Sudeikis proved they are enough for me in Going the Distance. If you need proof, just watch the extras on that film. Adding Bateman, Spacey, Aniston and Farrell with this concept seems like a movie that can’t miss.

Jennifer Aniston: The sex-mad dentist will see you now

7 July 2011 4:00 PM, PDT | The Independent | See recent The Independent news »

In the wake of a handful of deftly delivered crude remarks, Jennifer Aniston has changed her career around. After languishing for years in the doldrums of lacklustre romantic-comedy fare, with Horrible Bosses she has seized the opportunity to demonstrate once again that she's not just a pretty face, she's a fine comedienne too. As I talk to Aniston today, she is buzzing with energy, loving the attention she's getting for playing a lascivious dentist who pumps her patients with gas so she can have sex while they sleep in the chair. It's a character so very far removed from Rachel, whom she played for a decade in TV's Friends, and all those repetitive cutesy roles that followed; Just Go With It, The Switch, Love Happens and The Bounty Hunter in the space of the past two years alone. »

Mark Wahlberg May Pull a Bait And Switch

5 April 2011 7:31 AM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

Mark Wahlberg may be pulling a bait and switch on Universal with the action comedy Bait and Switch. "Bait and Switch" is an illegal advertising technique where an item that is advertised at a low price is meant to lure a customer in the door but when the customer gets there, that item is no longer available and the salespeople then try to get them to buy something else.

In the case of the movie (the storyline is being kept top secret), Wahlberg and producer Scott Stuber (who makes a lot of PG-13 romantic comedies like The Break-Up, You Me and Dupree, Love Happens, Couples Retreat, etc.) have made a deal with Universal to make the movie Bait and Switch with Wahlberg producing and Possibly starring, but that's not a definite. If he passed on taking the role, undoubtedly a big reason why Universal would want to make the movie, »

Stars In Rewind: Aaron Eckhart In A Creepy Student Film

7 March 2011 4:30 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

You'd think that someone who's achieved Aaron Eckhart's level of success would have always been wise enough to steer clear of a project called 'Suicidal Resurrection,' but then again we're talking about the square-jawed star who recently appeared in a movie called 'Love Happens,' so maybe some things never change.

Bad student films can happen to good actors, and there's no shame in that. These are enterprises purely intended to be learning experiences, after all, and you've got to leap before you can fly -- you've got to be in 'Thursday' before you can be in 'Any Given Sunday.' Having said that, Vince Mellen's 'Suicidal Resurrection' is truly something special. Billed by the filmmaker as Aaron Eckhart's "first role Ever on film," the 139-second short isn't just another student film, it's all of them combined. Follow the jump to check it out for yourself. »
