"Starved" starts where most documentaries about eating disorders end. It really goes deep into the emotional world, like the metaphorical and beautiful desert images. It doesn't rush or skim the surface of this issue. All the women interviewed have different disorders but the film reveals they share a common struggle for purpose and identity. The experts add information and layers to the silent narrative of the woman in the desert and the plight of the women in the film.
I also respect the filmmaker for her restraint. Instead of focusing on the sensational Entertainment Tonight aspects of the disorder, she looks at the underlying issues and emotions.
The music, sound and sound design are amazing and the cinematography is beautiful.
A quiet and profound film.
