Headcleaner: VHS Series Gets Third Installment Blues

Perhaps after this third installment this franchise can enter the same void for the format which it’s named, as this is by far the least thematically inventive anthology of the trio. A quintet of five up and coming horror directors spackle this latest omnibus, once loosely geared to tickle our nostalgic fancy for the retired home video format from an era where gritty and scary films used to be more prolific.

Interweaving between its three sordid tales is the wraparound segment, “Vicious Circles,” from director Marcel Sarmiento, better known as the helmer of “D is for Dog” from the first The ABCs of Death film and his feature, Deadgirl. Beginning with a tense teenage couple, whereby the young male filmmaker stumbles upon a high speed Los Angeles chase and uses the opportunity to snag some YouTube footage that will make him famous, »

Review: Starry Eyes

8 November 2014 2:24 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

We’ve all made sacrifices to be able to do whatever it is that we want to do. Some more than others, but it’s just a fact that in life, there are moments and opportunities that present themselves and we’re faced with the question of “how far will you go?”, a question that based on the situation, could lead decent people to become either a different person or bring out who they were all along. Some films address that question and challenge their viewers to ask themselves that same question, how far would You go to attain that goal, that dream that you’ve always had? Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s brilliantly haunting film, Starry Eyes, brings that question to its audience, and gives them a film that like most Great films, plants a seed in your head, one that opens up into a film that can »

The Greatest Horror Anthology Film Segments of All Time

25 October 2014 7:35 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.

With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.

Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.

Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time. »

Film Review: ‘V/H/S Viral’

17 October 2014 4:59 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The VHS homevideo format may have gone to its grave years ago, but the horror series of the same name lives on with its third anthology, “V/H/S Viral,” delivering three playful yet thoroughly disposable experiments in short-form p.o.v. cinema. While the scares are in short supply, there’s a surfeit of macabre, tongue-in-cheek creativity to be found here, from mock docs to skate vids, sandwiched between a gonzo found-footage framing device in which cameraphone-savvy teens risk their lives to become the next viral sensation. As portmanteau films go, this Bloody Disgusting-backed, Magnolia-released offering of attention-deficit thrills seems ready-made for the video-on-demand generation.

Only the wraparound segments, dubbed “Vicious Circles” and directed by “Deadgirl” helmer Marcel Sarmiento, take the “viral video” idea seriously, even if none of the teen characters seems old enough to even remember the VHS format. Instead, as members of the digital generation, these »

Beyond Fright Review: American Muscle

6 October 2014 8:52 AM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

American Muscle

The terms “Grindhouse” and “Exploitation” both get thrown around a tad bit too much these days. People seem to say that their film is a “throwback” to those slimy, gritty films of the ’70s, and the only thing their films have in common with those older films, is that fact that there are fake dust and scratches digitally inserted into their films to make them look gritty. Personally, I blame the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse for this resurgence of movies trying their best to look like exploitation films. What many of the filmmakers making those films don’t realize though, is that added dust and scratches doesn’t recreate the fun and adventure of those balls out, gnarly films of the ’70s, that their has to be a genuine admiration and respect for the genre to make a successful homage to the revenge-actioners of way back when. »

New Poster For V/H/S: Viral Bypasses Tape Angle; Features Sinister Look

V/H/S: Viral poster

It’s that time of year, when the latest entry into the popular V/H/S series gets ready to be unleashed onto horror fans. While the first two films went with the tape/footage angle in their posters, the newly released poster for V/H/S: Viral offers something new, feeling much more sinister than the previous ones. The film, which hits iTunes/VOD on October 23rd and limited theaters on November 21st via Magnet, features segments directed by Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Resolution), Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), Gregg Bishop (Dance Of The Dead), Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), and Todd Lincoln (The Apparition) with everything from Satanic cults to crazed ice cream trucks.

This one sounds like a complete 180 from the previous two films (especially with the absence of V/H/S mainstays Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett from the roster), what do you fright fanatics think? »

8 obscure superhero team films to follow Guardians of the Galaxy

28 August 2014 5:20 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy is officially a hit, and has been hailed as one of the company's best films by many a critic. Before its release, the film was considered Marvel's biggest risk, based on an obscure team of cosmic heroes little known among comic fans, let alone the general public.

In celebration of Guardians' success, here are some other lesser known superhero teams we would love to see on the big screen...

1. Doom Patrol

Introduced just three months before Marvel's own misfits, the X-Men, DC's team of superhero oddities are a different breed from that team of merry mutants. While X-Men frequently explored the themes of minorities and social acceptance, Doom Patrol has made a habit of embracing its strangeness.

With core members including Robotman - the brain of a critically injured racecar driver implanted in an artificial body - and Negative Man - possessed by »
