Candidate Witchiepoo & Voter Bribery
6 December 2013 | by (Toronto, Canada) – See all my reviews

In this episode cackling evil sorceress Witchiepoo decides to run for elected office to take control of a sparsely populated fairy tale land called 'Living Island' where she lives challenging popular and capable incumbent mayor H.R.Pufnstuf.

H.R.Pufnstuf - 'your friend when things get rough' was a kindly dragon-like creature with a head like a hamburger. A dedicated if somewhat eccentric and neurotic chief magistrate he administered to the constituents of Living Island on the children's TV show of the same name in 1969.

He mostly succeeded in protecting the residents from the excesses of Witchiepoo, mobilizing his 'Rescue Racing Crew' - a team of municipal employees whom he inspired to perform brave, capable and dedicated service against their true nature and enlisting his young friend Jimmy

  • a lost boy whom Witchiepoo had lured to the island in order to steal

his magic flute.

Pufnstuf was also a creative problem solver making the right decisions thwarting Witchiepoo without ever actually hurting her and bringing out the best in the bizarre and boorish islanders.

Whilst holding a belief in the role of government and helping residents wherever he could Pufnstuf nevertheless unsuccessfully attempted to persuade hippie protesters who picketed a sweet shop demanding free candy early in the series that they would have to work for it.

Even-handed and fair he refused to make rash promises whilst running for re-election despite Witchiepoo's candidacy - one that utilized anti-immigration rhetoric, blatant bribery and false promises to voters of free color TVs, swimming pools, watches and candy.

Whilst Witchiepoo is pathologically solipsistic and malevolent she nevertheless resists the urge to go negative before she casts a spell that enchants voters including Jimmy to love and elect her whilst turning against Pufnstuf.

Pufnstuf - recognizing that Witchiepoo only wants to use legislative power to enslave the island residents and is making promises she has no intention of delivering upon seeks the capable assistance and counsel in the person of wise old owl physician/scientist Dr.Blinky who creates a potion to break Witchiepoo's spell and secures electoral victory.
