6 Things With Da7e [Goodbye 2010]

31 December 2010 3:39 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Merry Happy End 2010, everyone. There's something about the end of the year, probably having much to do with the annual trek back to the suburb where I grew up, that brings everything into a sharp, marzipan-tinged relief. Choices I made throughout the year were good or bad, people I love and people I'm thankful for are the most important, and my year in media condenses drastically as I have free time to take in the many end-of-the-year lists. I'm not one for end-of-the-year lists. I like lists, and as someone who has worked on the internet for almost a full decade, I know the value of content that can be skimmed first and read second. However, the end of the year is such an arbitrary time to make these lists. It's commercialism that's the motivator, like it always is. Everyone gets time off at the end of the year, time »

Looking Back: The Top 10 Highest Grossing Movies from 2010!

31 December 2010 3:38 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The year may just be ending, but today's earnings won't make or break THR's tally of the Top 10 highest grossing films from 2010. No matter how many times we cry about wanting original stories, less sequels and more bold motion pictures, the films that earn the most money at the box office seem to indicate other desires from audiences worldwide. Nearly every movie included in the ten biggest earners of 2010 is either a sequel in an established franchise or an adaptation of a book or series of books, and one remake. Only two original films cracked the Top 10, and you probably already know one. See the full Top 10 list below! 10. Clash of the Titans - $163 Million Domestic / $493 Million Worldwide 9. How to Train Your Dragon - $218 Million Domestic / $495 Million Worldwide 8. Despicable Me - $251 Million Domestic / $540 Million Worldwide 7. Iron »

Week in geek's best of 2010

31 December 2010 6:26 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It's not been a vintage year for fanboy fare, writes Ben Child, but he's managed to find a top five worth shouting about. Post your own shortlist below

Once again we find ourselves in the season of lists, and just as was the case last year, I find myself incapable of finding 10 films that I can recommend as the year's best. Does this say something about the dearth of quality fanboy fare? Quite possibly. We may have emerged from the bad old years of Joel Schumacher Batman movies and Ben Affleck in a pimp suit, but there are still more poor and distinctly average films out there than there are great ones.

This year saw the arrival of Predators, much-hyped but ultimately a tired retread with few new ideas to revive the franchise, not to mention a pointless Laurence Fishburne pseudo-cameo. We also had the fetid Jonah Hex, in which »

2010 In Review: Phil’s Films of the Year

31 December 2010 4:19 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Well this is it. The end of 2010, and a last chance to look back on just what films made the year for me. There’s bound to be some surprises for some of you out there – although if you’ve been reading Blogomatic3000 for the past year you’ll no doubt have a good idea where this list is headed!

This list is compiled of all the cinematic releases of 2010, not the DVD or Blu-ray releases, you can check that list out here.

10) Machete

The type of film that has been long-missed in my house: a loud, gory, Ott, macho arse-kicking extravaganza that ticks all the good action movie boxes and isn’t afraid to be politically incorrect, sleazy, sexist and even racist! Compared to the glut of PG-13 rated PC action movies that we’ve seen on the big screen in recent years, this film is a breath of fresh air. »

Steven Neish – 2010 – A Year in Highlights

31 December 2010 2:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Joining HeyUGuys back in June of this year, I was eager to put my personal popcorn addiction to good use. A Psychology student by day and an usher by night, I had built up an encyclopaedic knowledge of film over three years of part time work, ever broadening my horizons with a determination to watch anything and everything I could. Finally blessed with an outlet for my burgeoning opinions and limitless enthusiasm, HeyUGuys has offered me opportunity after opportunity resulting in an inordinate number of cinematic highlights this 2010.

With Hollywood finally dropping the tiresome “darker is better” mantra to provide two of the very best comic-book adaptations to date – Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, in case it needed pointing out – and DreamWorks raising the bar with a series of above studio-par animated releases, it has been a year of many memorable moments. Inception was mind-bending, Four Lions was »

Top Film Scores of 2010

30 December 2010 8:36 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Top 10 lists are a dime a dozen in the Hollywood circle, but while most writers are busy compiling their “Best of” in terms of films, directors and performances I’m always more curious to explore the less-appreciated categories – particularly Best Motion Picture Score. And so without further ado, here are my picks for the Best Scores of 2010. Hit the jump to see the list. The Top Five How To Train Your DragonJohn Powell The year 2010 proved quite lucrative for animated films – Toy Story 3, Despicable Me, Tangled and even Megamind scored with critics and audiences alike – but the best in terms of overall production (in my humble opinion) belongs to DreamWorks Animations’ How to Train Your Dragon, an exciting, heartfelt, even epic motion picture if there ever was one. A lot of the film’s success can be attributed to John Powell’s terrific, absolutely riveting score, which combines »

My Top 10 Films of 2010

30 December 2010 5:46 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

The year is almost over, and you know what that means: list-making time across the entire internet. Venkman just added to the fray with his own Top 10 list, so I figured I'd throw my selections out there for you all to see.

Note: this is my personal list of my favorite films of the year, not a list of what I consider to be the "best" movies of the year (although many coincide). Here we go!

10. The Fighter

I literally had The Town in this spot as I was typing this list, but something came over me at the last second to change it. That's how close those two movies were battling for a spot here, and I think the emotional core of The Fighter gave it the slight edge over Ben Affleck's solid heist film. The Fighter features fantastic performances from every member of the cast, with Christian Bale being the clear standout, »

My Top 10 Favorite Films of 2010

30 December 2010 3:14 PM, PST | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

It’s been a fantastic year of movies, and it’s that time of year where I get to share my top ten favorite films of 2010 with you. The hardest part for me while making the list was ranking the movies because they were all so incredible. There was a lot of shuffling on this list, but this is it this is final.

These are movies that simply connected with me, and left a lasting impression. I've seen every film on my top 10 list three or more times. My list is a mixture of films that pretty much blew me away with their awesomeness. Each one of the films on my list were entertaining, inspiring, thought provoking, fun and each had some brilliant moments.

It’s always fun for me to put together my end of the year top 10 list of favorite movies. I understand that some of you wont agree with my choices, »

'Harry Potter' Trumps 'Twilight' As MTV Movies Blog Readers' Favorite Film Of 2010! [Poll Results]

30 December 2010 1:10 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Last week, we here at MTV Movies Blog asked you -- the members our well-informed, movie-loving readership -- to vote for your favorite film of 2010. You responded with vigor, casting 5,000 votes in the course of one week (nicely done!).

There were 34 movies included in the poll, ranging from indie darlings like "The Kids Are All Right" to mega-blockbusters like the year's highest-grossing film "Toy Story 3." In truth, however, the race came down to just two movies, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1" and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," proving that both series' fan bases have some seriously devoted members.

In the end, "Potter" beat out "Twilight" by a narrow 449 vote margin, with "Deathly Hallows - Part 1" amassing 46.5 percent of the total vote to "Eclipse"'s 37.5 percent -- together accounting for a whopping 84 percent of votes. In a shocker, the 3-D animated comedy "How to Train Your Dragon" beat out »

The 20 Best-Reviewed Films Of 2010: 'Toy Story 3' Tops Rotten Tomatoes' List

30 December 2010 12:28 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Some people love reading critics' reviews of movies, while other people hate them, but I think we can all unanimously agree that Rotten Tomatoes' aggregation of certified critics' reviews is one of the best movie resources on the web. The site's just listed the top 20 best-reviewed movies of 2010 (with a minimum of 60 reviews required), and the majority of them shouldn't be too surprising.

"Toy Story 3" took the top spot with 99 percent of the film's 247 reviews being positive. It's fitting, for once, that the top reviewed film of the year is also the highest grossing film of the year, and one of two movies in 2010 to gross over one billion dollars worldwide (the other is "Alice in Wonderland"). But what might surprise some people (especially those who didn't see it) is that another animated film, "How To Train Your Dragon," placed second on the list with 98 percent of its 156 reviews being positive. »

Academy Names 241 Screenplays and 77 Scores Eligible for the Oscar

We know you were losing sleep over it, so we're happy to be the first to tell you that Furry Vengeance and Yogi Bear are both eligible to be nominated for Best Screenplay Oscars on January 25. Also that Marmaduke score that has been wearing out your iPod? It's eligible too. However, the inclusion of these 2010 masterpieces really isn't that big a surprise. With final nominations just over a month away the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 241 screenplays - 134 original and 107 adapted - are eligible for a Best Screenplay nomination and that music from 77 films is eligible for Best Original Score (not including Black Swan, The Fighter or The Kids Are All Right [1]). Add those to the 248 films eligible [2] for Best Picture and Oscar voters have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Kind of. The Academy Lists 241 Screenplays and 77 Scores Eligible for the Oscar

30 December 2010 9:28 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The AMPAS have named 241 scripts eligible for the Academy Awards — 134 original, 107 adapted. Unlike the WGA, Winter’s Bone, King’s Speech, Toy Story 3, Never Let Me Go, and How to Train Your Dragon will be considered.

The AMPAS have also released the list of nominees for best score. The list was narrowed down to 77 scores, which makes Best Original Score the 2011 Oscar the category with the least number of films under consideration. The scores for Black Swan, True Grit, The Kids Are Alright and The Fighter will not be eligible to compete this year. Clint Mansell‘s Black Swan score and Carter Burwell‘s True Grit score were disqualified attributed to a designation within Rule 16 of the Academy’s Special Rules for Music Awards (5d under “Eligibility”), which excludes “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.” Meanwhile, the scores for The Kids Are All Right, »

Let’s face it: In Hollywood, it all comes down to money. Top-Grossing Movies of 2010

30 December 2010 4:21 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

The highest-grossing film of the year is Toy Story 3! 2010 saw an impressive raise and importance in the use of 3D-technology in filmmaking and movie releases after the success of Avatar in the format. Most of listed and numerous other titles being released in 3D formats, both converted or filmed (Jackass, Breathe, Huble, The Revenge of Kitty Galore).

The third movie of the Pixar Toy Story franchise came out in 2010, over a decade since the previous Toy Story 2 arrived theaters at 1999, and more than 15 years after the first Toy Story debuted in 1995. So, Disney grossed over $1 billion (together with Alice). This is the first time in history that two films earned such amount at the box office in the same year!

Warner Brothers and Dream Works Animation are production companies relied on fan favorites to bring in following box office results.

Toy Story 3 set to be 2010's best-reviewed film

30 December 2010 4:10 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Pixar trilogy's finale on course to be named most critically acclaimed as well as highest-grossing film of year

With just two days left of the year, Toy Story 3 looks set to be the best-reviewed film of 2010, according to the website rottentomatoes.com.

The site, which compiles reviews from more than 200 critics and ranks films as "fresh" or "rotten" accordingly, has not yet handed out its annual Golden Tomato awards, but says the final film in Pixar's trilogy about a group of toys that come to life when humans are not around will almost certainly be its No 1. Toy Story 3 is currently sitting pretty on 99% "fresh", Reuters reports, with only the Oscar-tipped The Social Network, which has 97%, in with a realistic chance of overtaking it.

If the animated tale made No 1 it would mark the fourth time in as many years that a Pixar film attained that spot. Last »
