7 May 2013 6:39 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Dungeons & Dragons is getting second chance at big screen glory.

Rights for the enduringly popular role-playing game have been acquired Warner Bros., Deadline reported on Tuesday. The studio is already developing a feature film adaptation of the game, which will be produced by Roy Lee (How to Train Your Dragon) and Courtney Soloman (An American Haunting). Set to write the script is David Leslie Johnson, whom Deadline describes as a protoge of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile).

This isn’t the first silver-screen attempt for Dungeons & Dragons, a game which has been around since 1974. A »

In a career stretching back more than two decades and counting, Scottish actress Ashley Jensen has starred in all kinds of things, from brief parts in The Bill and Casualty in the 90s, to BAFTA and Emmy award-winning roles in Extras and Ugly Betty.

Jensen's also provided the voices as Phlegma the Fierce in DreamWorks' hit How To Train Your Dragon, Nanette the frog in Gnomeo And Juliette, and the Surprisingly Curvaceous Pirate in The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists.

Game of Thrones and How to Train Your Dragon Cartoon Mashup

26 April 2013 11:15 AM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Here's a fun movie poster mashup that brings together Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon and Rapunzel from Tangled to give us an idea of what an animated version of HBO's Game of Thrones would look like. The poster was created by Toni Gordon who says,

I saw a cool manipulation of Rapunzel as Daenerys a few weeks back. It left me wondering if I could do something similar… Turns out I can.

The big blockbusters of summer 2014

Odd List Simon Brew 25 Apr 2013 - 06:50

Captain America 2, Fast & Furious 7, X-Men, Godzilla, Spider-Man and Transcendence lead our look ahead at the blockbusters of summer 2014...

As blockbuster season is now underway, with the release of Iron Man 3 and Oblivion, it's traditional for us to look ahead to what's coming next summer, and to examine what treats are on the horizon. We've thus sliced out the big films, that we know of now, that are being released between April and August 2014 (Noah, due at the end of March, just misses the cut, as does early March Tom Cruise vehicle, All You Need Is Kill).

And while there's some familiarity to them, there are signs it might just be a more interesting summer than you may think....

Tom Cruise Back on Top with 'Oblivion'

21 April 2013 12:24 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

As the only brand-new movie in nationwide release, sci-fi adventure Oblivion easily took first place with an estimated $38.2 million. Unfortunately, overall box office was down around 19 percent from the same frame last year, and it now appears that April 2013 will wind up about even with April 2012.Oblivion's $38.2 million start ($5.5 million in IMAX) is the highest non-sequel debut for star Tom Cruise since 2005's War of the Worlds, and it's his fifth-best ever behind that movie and the first three Mission: Impossible outings. It was a bit higher than 2002's Minority Report ($35.7 million), though with ticket price inflation it likely had noticeably lower attendance. Oblivion's solid (but not spectacular) opening can be attributed at least in part to smart scheduling. Bracing for the Summer box office season, studios typically avoid releasing big-budget fare during the month of April; Universal Pictures, however, successfully stretched the calendar in April 2009 and 2011 with Fast and Furious »

DreamWorks Animation is Bringing 'The Croods' Back for a Sequel

17 April 2013 2:10 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

If you didn't get enough preshistoric, caveman family antics with DreamWorks Animation's The Croods last month, then here's some good news. The studio is moving forward with a sequel to the film which featured the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Clark Duke, Catherine Keener and Cloris Leachman, and they're already in negotiations to bring them back. The studio also announced Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders (the team behind How to Train Your Dragon) are returning as writers and directors. It's good news for the studio after layoffs followed the box office failure of Rise of the Guardians. The Croods has already pulled in $144 million domestically and worldwide the numbers are up to $242 million to date. The question is where the sequel might go since we've already dealt with the "end of the world" scenario. Honestly, while The Croods was entertaining and had some gorgeous animation, »

'42' leads, 'Scary Movie 5' sets new low for franchise in Friday box office numbers

13 April 2013 10:55 AM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

It seems like audiences were interested in hearing a retelling of the life of Jackie Robinson, because viewers showed up in force to see the Harrison Ford-starring biopic "42" when it opened. That film clocked in an estimated $9.1 million on its opening day Friday (April 12).

Moviegoers weren't as kind to the other big film opening that day, as "Scary Movie 5" failed to make the splash that many were expecting. It only brought in $5.5 million on its first day of release, which is a new low for the horror spoof franchise. For some context, "Scary Movie 4" had a $19 million opening day, and even the "Scary Movie" knock off "A Haunted House" opened with $6.8 million back in January.

"Evil Dead" still clings to life, coming in third place with $3.2 million. The Dreamworks animated film "The Croods" brought in $3 million, leaving it only behind Dreamworks' "How To Train Your Dragon" by around $10 million. »

'42' Scores, 'Scary Movie 5' Bombs on Friday

13 April 2013 9:20 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

42 scored the best opening day ever for a baseball movie, while Scary Movie 5 showed some franchises are better left dead. The Jackie Robinson biopic debuted to an estimated $9.1 million from 3,003 locations on Friday. That's easily the best start ever for a baseball movie ahead of The Benchwarmers ($6.8 million) and Moneyball ($6.7 million). Assuming it has normal drops*and with an "A+" CinemaScore, there's no reason to expect otherwise*the movie is on pace for around $25 million for the three-day frame, which would make it the first baseball movie ever to open north of $20 million. In second place, Scary Movie 5 tanked with $5.5 million at 3,402 theaters. That sets a new low for the Scary Movie franchise behind Scary Movie 2 ($7.2 million), and is off 71 percent from Scary Movie 4's $19 million opening day at the same time in 2006. Finally, it's noticeably lower than January horror spoof A Haunted House ($6.8 million), which didn't have any brand recognition. »

Bryan Cranston Joins Kung Fu Panda 3

9 April 2013 1:00 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

In 2010, DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg told us of the company’s expansive plans for sequels to films including How To Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda. Now the third Panda pic is leaping into action, with Bryan Cranston, Mads Mikkelsen and Rebel Wilson all aboard to lend their tonsil talents. They’ll join returning Panda veterans Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Seth Rogen in the film, which Kung Fu Panda 2’s Jennifer Yuh Nelson is back to direct.Beyond the basic concept carried through the movies – Black’s warrior Po, the chosen one, continues his quest to master martial arts and fight evil, all while eating as much as he can – nothing is known about the movie just yet. We don’t even know which characters the three newcomers will be playing, though here's hoping Cranston plays a fellow panda called Heisenbear. The film is set to hit cinemas, »

Emily S. Whitten: The Little Things

9 April 2013 5:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

I love tiny things. Love them. Tiny things, filled with tiny details. This is why, somewhere in my closet, I have a box of random tiny dollhouse items that I’ve bought in various places or made myself, despite not ever having owned a dollhouse or the dolls that would accompany it. (My dolls were either baby-sized or tiny. Polly Pocket, anyone?) I have tiny newspapers and books that open; tiny jars of fake Necco Wafers and peppermint sticks; tiny wrapped “Christmas presents;” tiny forks and knives and mugs…I can’t resist them, because they’re just so intricate and cute. And tiny! It’s also why I own and dote on a tiny Chinese dwarf hamster. Well, okay, so I’ve had bigger pets, too, but anyone who reads Twitter knows Bitty Miss Izzy is like my spirit animal or something, and I am perpetually unable to get »

Audiences Thrill to 'Evil Dead,' 'Jurassic Park 3D'

7 April 2013 12:00 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Moviegoers eager for some old-fashioned thrills turned out in solid numbers this weekend for the Evil Dead remake and the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park 3D. Add in good performances from holdovers, and this was one of the stronger weekends of 2013 so far: the Top 12 earned an estimated $127.5 million, which is up nine percent from the same frame last year.Playing at 3,025 locations, Evil Dead took first place with an estimated $26 million. That ranks 10th all-time among horror remakes, and falls right in between Halloween ($26.4 million) and The Amityville Horror ($23.5 million). While it's not the top horror opening of the year*that title still belongs to Mama ($28.4 million)*it is at least noticeably above January remake/reboot Texas Chainsaw 3D ($21.7 million). This good opening is a tribute to strong execution all around from TriStar (a division of Sony) and FilmDistrict. March Not Strong Enough to Salvage First Quarter of 2013

5 April 2013 5:26 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Coming off a truly terrible February, the box office rebounded a bit in March. Total domestic grosses came in around $828 million, which makes it only the third March ever to amass over $800 million. Still, it was off 12 percent from last March's record*that drop can be entirely accounted for with The Hunger Games effect*and year-to-date box office remains down 12 percent.Oz The Great and Powerful led the way in March with $198.4 million, which is more than twice as much as any other title. It got off to a very good $79.1 million start on the second weekend of the month, and that remains by-far the highest opening of the year so far. Unfortunately, through its first 24 days, Oz was around $95 million behind Alice in Wonderland, and it will close with over $100 million less. That'd be fine if it was doing great business overseas, but it's going to wind up with »

‘Evil Dead’ Could Top Crowded Weekend B.O.; ‘Jurassic Park’ 3D Release Harder to Predict

4 April 2013 4:14 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A remake and 3D re-do join a list of holdovers bigfooting each other at the B.O. this weekend.

Sony’s “Evil Dead” remake looks most likely to scare up top coin at the domestic box office in the low-to-mid $20 millions. But Universal’s “Jurassic Park” 3D conversion is a more intriguing question mark, with tracking in the high teens.

Family holdover “The Croods” should also fare well in its third frame using 2010′s “How to Train Your Dragon” as a viable comparison. That film dropped just 14% in its third outing; if “Croods” falls similarly, it’ll collect around $22 million through Sunday. Also, “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” looks to gross somewhere in the high teens.

The four-pic spread should be good for business, especially since Easter fell this time last year. The market then still was benefiting from holdover “Hunger Games.”

Friday grosses will provide more clarity concerning the weekend’s outcome, »

Audiences Re-Enlist With 'G.I. Joe' Over Easter Weekend

31 March 2013 12:20 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

G.I. Joe: Retaliation was the big attraction over Easter weekend, though Tyler Perry's Temptation also demonstrated once again how solid Perry's niche is. Meanwhile, The Host's disappointing debut was the latest sign that the young-adult genre is fading. The Top 12 earned an estimated $140.8 million, which is nearly identical to the same weekend last year. The G.I. Joe sequel grossed an estimated $41.2 million this weekend, which ranks as the second-highest Easter debut ever behind 2010's Clash of the Titans ($61.2 million). Including Thursday, the movie has earned $51.7 million; that's a bit below G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra's $54.7 million three-day start in August 2009. For its three major stars, this is also a potent opening: it ranks third-highest for Channing Tatum, second-highest for The Rock, and it's remarkably the top debut ever for a Bruce Willis movie. The fact that G.I. Joe: Retaliation retained so much of its predecessor's opening in »

'G.I. Joe' Stays Solid on Friday

30 March 2013 10:30 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

G.I. Joe: Retaliation gained some momentum on Good Friday and held on to first place with a very good $15.5 million. Meanwhile, Tyler Perry's Temptation opened nicely, while The Host was a bit underwhelming. Including its Thursday gross, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has now earned an estimated $26 million through its first two days. That pales in comparison to the first Joe movie, which had already earned $40.3 million through this point. Still, it's a different time of year and a different release pattern, so it's not a perfect apples-to-apples comparison. In fact, it now looks like Retaliation could wind up grossing over $50 million by Sunday, which would be close to The Rise of Cobra's $54.7 million opening weekend. In second place, The Croods eased a very light eight percent to an estimated $10.7 million. That drop is nearly identical to that of How to Train Your Dragon at the exact same point, which suggests that »

Around-the-World Roundup: 'Croods' Opens to $62.4 Million Overseas

26 March 2013 2:27 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Coinciding with its solid domestic debut, The Croods opened in around 60 percent of the international marketplace and scored a very good $62.4 million. With the Easter holidays coming up, the movie is well-positioned to be an overseas hit for DreamWorks Animation and Fox International.Including lucrative previews, Russia and Mexico were the highest-grossing territories for The Croods with $12.7 million and $8.7 million, respectively. It also performed well in the U.K. ($8.1 million), Brazil ($4.2 million), Germany ($4.2 million), Italy ($4.1 million) and Spain ($3.3 million). Among these major markets, the 3D share was highest in Germany (78 percent) and Russia (74 percent) and lowest in Mexico (40 percent) and Spain (20 percent). The Croods expands in to 19 more territories, including Australia, this upcoming weekend. Based on this start, it's reasonable to expect The Croods to earn at least as much as How to Train Your Dragon ($277.3 million), and it could even get lose to Rio ($341 million).
