What a CD Really Does

15 December 2010 8:13 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

Back Stage's Dec. 9 news analysis, "And the Oscar Doesn't Go To…," examines why casting directors haven't been awarded Oscars in recognition for their work. The feeling I got from those interviewed is that we do not deserve them, and it was even suggested that the process of casting the main characters in features rarely involves the casting director at all. The article seems to say that the main cast is largely assembled by the producers and director, and the casting directors are merely responsible for casting the "tertiary characters."About the casting of the film "The Kids Are All Right," Steve Pond of TheWrap.com is quoted as saying, "The actors in that movie all do a great job, and it's a great job of casting, but was it done with a traditional casting director? The story I hear is it was all done with personal relationships." He is referring »

Could Green Lantern’s CGI Costume Ruin the Movie?

14 December 2010 1:50 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

It’s no secret that Superman and Batman are the two biggest characters in the DC comic and movie universes, but the famous duo may have to clear space next year when fan-favorite Green Lantern shines in theaters.

Most of Warner Bros.’ decisions, so far, have all been the right ones as they attempt to bring a second-tier DC character to the big screen – hiring Martin Campbell (Casino Royal) to direct, bringing Greg Berlanti (Dirty Sexy Money), Michael Goldenberg (Contact) and Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone) onboard to write the screenplay, securing the musical talents of composer James Howard (The Dark Knight) and casting fanboy favorite Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) as Green Lantern himself.

However, the filmmakers’ decision to ditch the standard latex/leather/spandex combination for Green Lantern’s superhero costume in favor of a more modern,…

What actor would you watch in anything, good or bad? Our pick: Victor Garber, star of SyFy's 'Ice Quake'

11 December 2010 9:39 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Is there an actor who can do no wrong in your eyes? An actor who can entice you to watch anything that might be on television, no matter how dubious? Whose mere presence can make even a mediocre if not downright lousy “entertainment experience” seem at least somewhat worthwhile? For me, there is one anwer to all those questions: “No. But Victor Garber comes to close.” Garber is most famous for playing Jack Bristow, super-spy father to super-spy Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) in the J.J. Abrams spy-fi series Alias. His intensely taciturn yet deceptively warm performance–part James Bond, part »

Gee, I miss Murder One. But if I can’t have the old legal drama back, then it looks like General Hospital is the place to go to get a Daniel Benzali fix these days. The ABC sudser lassoed the veteran actor for a generous story arc that will stretch well into 2011. EW obtained this exclusive peek at Benzali’s first day on the set, which will air Monday, Dec. 6. Review: "Life As We Know It" is Big, Conventional (and Gay-Inclusive) Romantic Comedy

8 October 2010 9:02 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Josh Duhamel, director Greg Berlanti, and Katherine Heigl

Have you noticed how the studio behind Life As We Know It has been increasingly featuring that shot of Josh Duhamel in his white boxer briefs in much of the publicity for the movie? You certainly can't blame them for highlighting one of the movie's major assets.

In fact, Duhamel's obvious hotness is a (funny) reoccurring joke in the movie, and it's not just women who notice how handsome he is. The movie is set in the suburbs, and the neighbors include a gay couple who spend a fair amount of time ogling Duhamel (and admonishing each other for ogling).

This gay-inclusiveness is only a small part of the movie, but I can't help but think that part of the reason it and other brief gay elements are there is because the movie's director is an out gay men: Greg Berlanti, the »

Life Unexpected 2.05 “Music Faced” Advance Review

6 October 2010 3:03 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Excited for next week’s Life Unexpected, which happens to be the crossover episode with One Tree Hill? I’ve got an early look at “Music Faced” for you right now.

Here’s how the story goes: Ryan (Kerr Smith) is hosting a music festival, which brings Oth‘s Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) and Mia (Kate Voegele) to Portland. Haley then meets Cate (Shiri Appleby), bonds with her over their similarities, and is there to lend a helping hand when the truth about Cate’s birth control gets out. Oh, and because this is a music festival, there are appearances by Sarah McLachlan, Ben Lee, and Lux theme song artist Rain Perry, too.

If you’ve forgotten that Ryan and Cate are trying to have a baby (or he is, anyway), the show opens with them in bed – and thankfully done with that by the time that Baze, Lux and »

Glee's Heather Morris has revealed that she toured with Beyoncé for six months prior to securing her role in the hit musical show. The actress, who portrays cheerleader Brittany Pierce, said that she worked on Beyoncé's 'Single Ladies' tour. After I finished the tour, I started working with choreographer Zach Woodley, who started hiring me to do things like Fired Up! and Eli Stone. Nikita 1.03 “Kill Jill” Recap

23 September 2010 10:21 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Whoever comes up with these Nikita episode titles is having too much fun, I think. Are they all going to be this tongue-in-cheek?

Slightly amusing title aside, this is the episode I’ve been waiting for. I’ve been sitting on the fence with Nikita, seeing flashes of possibility mixed in with moments of disappointment and the beginnings of a formulaic structure. However, I couldn’t be convinced to give up just yet, not when I’d seen some possibility in “2.o” and when this episode featured a great guest star in Eli Stone‘s underrated Julie Gonzalo. The tools of a great hour were certainly on the table. This episode, I told myself, would be the true test of how good Nikita may or may not be.

So let’s find out, shall we?

Recap & Review – Nikita 1.2 “2.0″

16 September 2010 10:12 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

How cute. Nikita‘s second episode is named “2.0.”

Now that I’m past that, the second episode of the CW’s new spy drama follows the pattern of the first (and maybe the series?) as Division gets a new mission and Nikita tries to stop them from completing it. This time, Percy and Michael are supposed to take a Slavic leader wanted for war crimes into protective custody, while Nikita would like to see him with a hole in the head. What neither side counts on is the presence of mercenaries with their own agenda.

In case you missed last week, we open with a monologue that explains everything, which is what passes for the show’s opening sequence. I figured there’d be a cool theme song to groove to. Oh, well. Nikita is meeting with a guy named Trevor, who has lots and lots of guns, so she »

‘Stargate Universe’: Guest Stars Galore!

16 September 2010 10:06 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

The second season of Syfy’s mind blowing Stargate Universe is around the corner with a barrage of guest stars under it’s belt.

Show Patrol’s Curt Wagner exclusively broke news that Victor Garber (Alias, Eli Stone), Kathleen Quinlan (“Event Horizon”, “Apollo 13″) and French Stewart (3rd Rock From The Sun, “Inspector Gadget 2″) will be boarding the Destiny this fall for Sgu’s sophomore season.

Garber’s role will be that of Ambassador Ovirda of the planet Langara, which was last seen in the Stargate Sg-1 episode “Counterstrike” where it was reported that it fallen under Ori rule. How this planet and Ovirda will factor into the Destiny’s trek will be interesting, due to the Destiny being several light years from the Milky Way. It is also good to note that Langaria is also the home world of Jonas Quinn (Corin Nemic), a former Sg-1 member.

Marc Guggenheim, Sam Raimi Set Projects

Eli Stone co-creator Marc Guggenheim has set up an event-type serialized drama project at ABC with writer Jennifer Robinson and director-producer Gary Fleder. Meanwhile, Sam Raimi has sold a pitch to CBS in the first development season since Stars Road Entertainment, his company with Joshua Donen, focused on primetime TV with a first-look deal at Sony TV. Both projects have gotten script commitments. The Guggenheim/Robinson project, which the two are co-writing, follows the White House Office of Crisis Management as they tackle one huge global crisis per season. The first season would chronicle a crisis with a ticking clock on board the international space station. Producing alongside Guggenheim and Robinson are Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile via their ABC Studios-based Mojo shingle. If the project goes to pilot, Fleder will also direct. Under his overall deal with ABC Studios, which is producing the new project, Guggenheim is »

New Fall TV Shows 2010 – What is Coming and What to Expect (Part I)

1 September 2010 10:41 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Now that September is here the networks are in the final sprint for the new 2010-2011 season. If you watch TV you probably will have seen many of these shows advertised. The new season lineup includes inevitable staples (classic cop and legal dramas) and more peculiar blends (The Shield’s Michael Chiklis in a family series playing a dad with superpowers, for example); some legendary names (Jj Abrams, Shawn Ryan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg) and many fresh faces. A few shows like The Event (NBC), Running Wilde (Fox), Broadwalk Empire (HBO) or The Walking Dead (AMC) have already created buzz. For now, however, all of them are pure potential, waiting for their chance to conquer primetime. But despite any hopes or expectations, the only thing certain is that, among all of these promising shows, very few will make it to the second season mark.

'Lost,' 'FlashForward' Come Up Mostly Empty At Emmys

29 August 2010 4:53 PM, PDT | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

There was some hope that "Lost" could get a significant boost with its recent swan song on ABC at the Emmy awards this year, but it just wasn't going to happen -- not as long as "Mad Men" remains on AMC. "Lost" ended up with only a single Emmy, for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series, that was actually handed out the week before for the episode "The End." Among those winning in that category were Stephen Semel, Mark J. Goldman, Christopher Nelson and Henk Van Eeghen. Another ABC series, "FlashForward," also won an Emmy, but was for Outstanding Stunt Coordination for Danny Weselis in the episode "No More Good Days." It was Weselis' first nomination after working on shows like "Eli Stone," "Day Break" and four years on the Fox classic "The X-Files." Weselis »

Adam Sandler plays both of the title roles in his upcoming comedy "Jack and Jill," but he's making room for one more: Katie Holmes.

The "Batman Begins" star is in talks to join the cast as Sandler's wife, The Hollywood Reporter reveals. The Thanksgiving-set story centers on Jack (Sandler), a family man whose twin sister (also Sandler) pays a holiday visit and then doesn't leave. In a bizarre twist, the movie also stars Al Pacino ... as himself.

"Jack and Jill" will be directed by Dennis Dugan, a longtime Sandler cohort. He most recently directed the former "Saturday Night Live" comic in "Grown-Ups," "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," but their relationship extends as far back as "Happy Gilmore."

Press tour: 'No Ordinary Family' co-creator Greg Berlanti gets his geek on

Greg Berlanti is a nerd. You wouldn't have necessarily known that if you just went by his TV body of work, which includes "Everwood," "Jack & Bobby," "Brothers & Sisters" and "Eli Stone," among others. In the last year or so, though, Berlanti's geek bonafides have been hard to miss. He's a producer and (along with frequent collaborator and sometime comic book scribe Marc Guggenheim) screenwriter on the upcoming "Green Lantern" movie with Ryan Reynolds. We caught up with TV veteran Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters, Everwood, Eli Stone) at Comic-Con last week, who was on-hand to speak about his new show No Ordinary Family. As Mr. Berlanti coins it, the show is "a family show you've never seen before." He speaks a little bit about the genesis of the show and co-authoring the idea with executive producer Jon Feldman. Besides that, he mentions that it's closer to the Spider-man movies in terms of tone (as opposed to The Dark Knight) and he also lets us know that the show has a little bit more action than you'd think it would.
