"Weird Al" Yankovic's 11th album, 2003's Poodle Hat, is my least favourite album in his catalogue, and I know I'm not alone. I find that the parodies on that album are still great, as usual, but unlike on any of his previous albums, none of the originals stand out as classics. However, the acclaimed musician/parodist's 2006 follow-up, Straight Outta Lynwood, shows him back in top form, with both classic parodies AND originals, just like on the vast majority of his other albums! In addition to the great new album, on the flip side of the disc is this bonus DVD!
The DVD features seven different videos. These are mostly animated videos of all six of the original songs on the album ("Pancreas," "I'll Sue Ya," "Virus Alert," "Weasel Stomping Day," "Close But No Cigar," and "Don't Download This Song,") as well as a documentary short that shows footage of Al and his band in the studio, and gives viewers an insight on how these songs were recorded!
Al has now been making comedy albums for over two decades, and over this time, he has also made a movie, UHF, and a short-lived kids' program called The Weird Al Show! With all he has done in his career, he has gotten some haters, but seems to have a lot (and I mean a LOT) more hardcore fans than haters, so that's really not an issue. This Straight Outta Lynwood bonus DVD, although fairly short, is a real treat for any huge Weird Al fanatic to watch, and probably for moderate fans as well! You can enjoy the songs and the animation, and see how these six songs were recorded! I should probably just warn you that the video for "Close But No Cigar," is a bit racy.
