Storyline

Kim and her boyfriend Matt have just broken up, but they travel together to a cottage nearby a lake to spend the weekend with their friends Eve, Dash and his wife Amber and Baker and his new girlfriend Lily. The atmosphere becomes heavy with the situation between Kim and Matt, and one of them suggests them to play "Dead Mary". Matt, Eve and Dash summon the evil witch repeating her name three times in front of a mirror with a candle. Along the night, Matt hears weird noises, is killed and returns to life, while part of the group is possessed by the fiend. Without knowing who is possessed, the rest of the group fights to survive. Trivia

The script originally featured an actual Bloody Mary who, when summoned by the mirror game, rose from the depths of the lake to murder the characters one by one. Director Robert Wilson decided that it would be more interesting if the evil force was never seen, but instead could manifest itself in any one of the old friends gathered at the cabin, thus making the film more a creepy paranoia piece and less a supernatural slasher film. However, many film websites still make reference to the film's original (and now incorrect) synopsis. See more »

Intense and gripping horror
6 August 2009 | by (Lake Cowichan, BC Canada) – See all my reviews

Dead Mary. Damn good movie. Surprisingly great direction with a very talented cast and an intelligent and realistic script. The film starts out uncomfortable then intense as it shows the dysfunctional relationships between some old friends who spend a weekend by the lake with each other. They seem completely sick of each other and are going through the motions of "keeping in touch" even though they probably hate each other more by now. They become bored the first night and dare to play the game of "Dead Mary". You take a candle into a darkened room with a mirror and repeat the words "Dead Mary" three times into the mirror. This is supposed to bring the horrendous "bloody Mary" to life. A few of the friends attempt this to not much luck. Later on that night the horror unfolds. Torture and blood starts flowing fast in this suspenseful and horrifying gem. I hope to see more Canadian horror movies out of director/producer Robert Wilson and writers Christopher Warre Smets and Peter Sheldrick. Thanks go out to the filmmakers for not trying to pose this film as if it were American. It's pitiful to see so many inept Canadian horror films try to fly American flags throughout their films in an attempt to gain American acceptance. How they think that posing as an American film helps them (when their movies suck in the first place) I have no idea. They just don't get it. Horror fans love excellent horror movies. It doesn't matter if it's an Italian Giallo from Dario Argento or a Japanese ghost story like the original Grudge and Ring films. We only want films that are able to keep us on the edge of our seats which this movie does throughout.
