When Capt. Triggers Nicholas Jones first enters the men's quarters he admonishes them that if the engine quits on takeoff NEVER turn back (to the runway). The reason for this "rule" is that having any emergency so soon after takeoff and so near the runway virtually guarantees that you''ll not have sufficient altitude to complete the turn back to the runway. The best response to such an event is to either land straight ahead or land in an open area/field slightly to the left or right of the airport/runway. This MAY result in a crash landing but attempting a low altitude turn to return to the runway WILL result in a crash. This is why Capt. Trigger admonished them so vehemently about not turning back. This principle has not changed in 100 years and is still taught today.
