Impressive, With Plenty of Emotion
arorashadow_20034 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
My goodness, what an interesting show this was to watch. Had many good qualities and bad qualities and plenty of fan service. I can't say that I am disappointed in the slightest, especially with the great ending it had.

Shy, timid Himeko happily attends school with both the popular and beautiful Chikane and her childhood friend, Souma, blissfully unaware of what's in store for her. Howeve, the destiny of these three changes on Himeko's 16th birthday when the mark of the sun appears on her chest. What does this solar mark represent? At the same time, why has a black aura of agony burst forth from Souma? Who is enemy? The legend of the eight-headed beast returns to Japan! Once again sounds like a very interesting story and it really was. Fantasy Meets Mecha, with a touch of Horror and plenty of romance, and enough melodrama to make it a soap opera. Now I thought the romantic intrigue was a very nice touch but what I didn't like was the beaten down love-web, which seems to be so persistent in romantic Anime. In a romantic comedy it can work but Kannazuki is a dark romance drama, which means adding the love web and throwing in the maid to be apart of it, is a pathetic attempt to add comic relief when it's really not needed. It is important to try to add some light material but not so much that you scream botched writing and desperation. Despite some of the over-dramatic dialog even for a show like this, it's really a wonderful story and a decent one, pretty clever. The genre mixes went well, even when you throw in the giant robot, it seems to work.

Acting for the most part is quite mixed, decent and mediocre at the same time. Now Himeko's voice sounds a little spacey and a little scratchy at times as well. Almost like the VA's is trying to do a high voice. While Jennifer Sekiguchi certainly makes for a lovable Himeko acting skills is something to be desired for her. However her co-star Michelle Ruff does wonders with Chikane. Ruff brings out Chikane's many characteristics in the best way. The sweet as honey Chikane, the elegant Chikane even the dark and evil Chikane. Ruff once again proves her self to be a voice actress of many talents, and as I said before she did wonders with this character. The other cast is also fairly mixed, decent and mediocre at the same time. With some notables such as Sandy Fox, Melissa Fahn, Kate Higgins, and others, they shine in their roles as the evil orochi. Steve Staley makes for a great Souma Ogami, who brings out the words of compassion for Himeko.

The musical score was one of the finest scores for an Anime series of this genre that I have heard. With all the places it could have gone including ditching out altogether, it was refreshing to see a lovely score. However there were some minor problems with it. The cues were a tad predictable and like some of the dialog made it feel very melodramatic. But really that was the only flaw to it, so non the less it had a wonderful feeling to it. The themes I think were somehow fitting. The opening was a very heavy techno-j-pop style and it just seemed to work. Overall my hat's off to Mina Kubota for writing a wonderful score.

The animation and style was very beautiful in this. Dark tones and bright tones all mixed together splendidly. The giant robot to each character (with the exception of Miyako and Gorochi) are beyond wonderful. Chikane's eyes also stand out to me, they are like two deep pools full of thought.

Overall this is a worthwhile series, so give it a shot.

It breaks my heart!

Warning: Spoilers
I finished the series yesterday, and I couldn't stop thinking about it. It is a truly beautiful story and so sad it breaks my heart. The love story is the best I've ever seen in any animation, not only because it's yuri based it's full of emotions. The whole series is filled with violence and plenty of dark material, so this is not a cute animation for children. One of the main theme that I really don't like are all the mechas. It just doesn't go down very well.

However,I still think it is one of the best adult anime. I will watch it all over again. The character of Chikane is something so extraordinary that I almost think she is a real person. She is multi-layered, and so well written. Also don't forget the theme music, it gives you the feeling of their fate, so full of sorrow.

Simply love it! Just skipped all the ocochi and mecha parts, this would be perfect!

Moon and Sun meets transformers
Irishchatter7 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
You never expect to see a Yuri series that involves robots that have the similar like designs as transformers. It is kinda surprising but it does copy someone elses work in my opinon. Although it was interesting I have to say and the fact we see two lovers who are like different stars. Miko is like this Barbie doll type of girl who has a sun appearing on her chest and Chikane is like this handsome loyal type who has a moon appearing on the back of her neck. Pretty much, they are both the star and the moon who I suppose, make Soma's "transformer" robot invisible. I kinda felt sorry for the guy, he really loved Miko but since she was in love with Chikane, there was no chance the pair of them were ever going to get together!

This yuri series was odd as there were so many twist and turns that it was really good! I give this series 8/10!

True love is forever...
only_a_human6 January 2007
This has to be probably one of the best anime series I've seen in the past six years; not because of the action (of which it has a plausible amount to share), but because of the intricate and beautiful story line that is built up carefully along the 12 episodes that this wonderful experience lasts. This anime is in most of its composition a heart-touching romantic plot, meaning that most adrenaline lovers out there will surely be turned down from going any further than the first 3 episodes or so. But for those who enjoy the ride and stay until the end, they will surely be rewarded with more than they could ever expect.

"Kannazuki no miko" is a love story anime that is worth noticing over other series and definitely pays off for those who truly appreciate it. There are also other aspects to relish about it, such as some of its cultural references towards the Japanese folklore or its majestic use of ambiance to set the moods in accordingly. The drawings and the music are pretty good elements too, surpassing that of any average anime.

A definite 10/10

An emotional ride with awesome action
Trixie_reviews15 February 2019
I really liked this. The story started kind of cute with some cliche villains, but as I kept on watching it developed a lot. It was sad to see how fate was cruel to Chikane and Himeko like it tried to do everything to tear them apart. Only at the very end, we see that their story does indeed end happily.

I loved the robots and the action scenes, they were a pretty cool addition and not something you would usually see in a Yuri anime. I liked Soma as well, but only as a friend and protector of both priestesses. It did bother me a little that the anime kept on pushing him and Himeko together plenty of times. But even so, I was really happy that in the end, Himeko realized the one she loved was Chikane and not him. And maybe in a way, it was a good thing that he was such an important character with a strong presence because when Himeko rejected him, it showed how much she actually cared for the beautiful moon girl and that she would choose her no matter what. Nothing like way, way too many yuri animes that focus on girls getting in love with girls only when there are no or barely any males around (like that stupid all-girls school trope). This felt much more real, their love much more powerful. I liked it and I definitely recommend.

Ultra Cool,and Romantic
TimothyMcKann10 April 2007
When I saw the first volume of this anime on DVD on sale at a Music Store,I had to decide if I should see this series,or not. But after reading about it,I decided to buy it,and it was truly awesome. It was pretty cool with the 2 girls, and the boy with his giant robot. My favorite characters in this show are Himeko, and Souma.I do believe they are meant for each other. The robots in this series do almost look like the Gundams. Souma's robot is very cool, and powerful. But what this is really about,it's about Love,Reliability, and bravery. It's important to be with that person, and be kind to them. Reliability is to protect those who are in danger, and need help. Bravery is to never give up in what you believe in and to fight back. But however, this series is one of a kind. So if you see something cool, then this is the series to see. It's very cool.

One of the best anime's I have seen
diaz-karina1122 April 2023
Grew up with yuri when I was just 16. I love the anime and it help me grow as a person. Today I'm a 30 year old engineering student. A woman to its full extend. Yuri help me come in terms with my sexuality. Ayako did an incredible job voicing Chikane in Japanese. It's her birthday on March 31. Noriko Shitaya voice Himeko and she did an excellent job. I was surprise the English dub was so good Michelle Ruff who also voices Rukia in Bleach did an incredible job voicing Chikane. Stephanie did well voicing Himeko. It's a beautiful girl love story. I don't regret ever getting into anime when I was in high school.
