Bobby and Liz's families are trying their best to blend their very different styles of celebrating Christmas when a Christmas Eve delivery to Philip and Simon's house injures "Santa" Mace. And Bobby feels pressure to compete with the lavish Christmas gifts that Philip and Simon have planned for Liz.
It's Christmas time, and Bobby kindly offers to replace Liz dads' tree which looses all its needles. This adds to Philip's horror about the feast, thanks to his mother. So Bobby persuades his father, who sells trees in a Santa suit, to deliver one. While they take a long time to position it to Philip's standard of perfection, Mace loses his patience and picks it up, only to get another immobilizing back-ache. Massage doesn't do the trick this time, so the O'Neil family moves its cheap Christmas-traditions in, clashing as badly with the stylish home and traditions as the couples themselves always do; yet the festive show must go on with a weirdly mixed menu. Bobby panics when he learns the dads both bought Liz a superb de-luxe watch, so he goes shopping for a 'decent' gift. He presents his ideas to Simon, who finds fault in every one and yet offers a consolation he discards himself, and a generous alternative.
