At the dawn of television, feature cinematographers were leery of becoming involved in the new medium, which many associated with diminished prestige. TV’s shortcomings in comparison with the glories of the silver screen included severe time constraints, tight budgets and the vagaries of network distribution.
Now, with the advent of what many are calling TV’s golden age, the segregation between film and TV cinematography is a thing of the past. This year’s Emmy-nominated DPs have many reasons for embracing the small screen. (The four who were contacted for this story spoke before the Dp winners were announced at the Creative Arts Emmys.)
Two-time Oscar-winning cinematographer John Toll, previously known almost exclusively for his cinema work, came onto Netflix’s “Sense8” after making two features (“Cloud Atlas” and “Jupiter Ascending”) with its creators, Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
He says his decision to shoot for television on the project was a natural extension of that working »

Ric Roman Waugh's latest movie, Shot Caller, explores the question of what one would do if unexpectedly sent to prison, telling the story through the perspective of Jacob, played by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
In order to fully immerse himself in the system, the stuntman-turned-director volunteered at the Department of Corrections in California. "I wasn't going to commit a crime to get inside," he joked. "I did it the best way I thought that could give me an unflinching look at the system [on the] inside."

While American audiences wait for the Hollywood remake of Jacques Audiard’s gritty 2010 French thriller “A Prophet,” Ric Roman Waugh swoops in with a comparably gritty prison epic of his own: Debuting on DirecTV two weeks before hitting theaters, “Shot Caller” dramatizes how a hardcore stint behind bars transforms an otherwise docile citizen — in this case, a white-collar wheeler-dealer (Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) convicted of a DUI manslaughter charge and tossed in with the violent offenders — into a ruthless crime boss.
The character’s arc proves considerably more complex than that description suggests, as Waugh forgoes cheap action-movie gimmicks, offering up instead a haunting psychological portrait of an intelligent man forced to completely reinvent himself before he can even dream of seeking redemption for his previous sins. “Shot Caller” marks the third time that writer-director Waugh (who previously helmed “Felon” and “Snitch”) has taken audiences into this intimidating underworld, and the tough, no-punches-pulled »

Ric Roman Waugh is no stranger to the examining the American criminal justice system.
The stunt-man-turned-director’s latest prison film, “Shot Caller,” shows how even the best of men can be corrupted by the current correctional system. Following “Felon” and “Snitch” Waugh finishes off what he has deemed his ‘Prison Trilogy’ with “Shot Caller” — a thriller that is part ’90s action movie, part character study.
I was writing a lot of movies and was very fortunate to work for a lot of major producers. I wanted to deviate away from the big, expensive action movies and direct stuff I was passionate about. I went to a really close friend, [film producer] Tucker Tooley »

For his upcoming crime thriller Shot Caller, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau put on a serious amount of muscle to play a prison inmate who gets wrapped up in a criminal enterprise behind bars -- but for one of the posters designed for the film, the handsome star bears a striking resemblance to another leading man: Dwayne Johnson.
In fact, for the Shot Caller one-sheet, it appears as though Coster-Waldau's head has been photoshopped onto Johnson's body from the poster for his crime thriller Snitch -- both of which were directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
The Game of Thrones star sat down with Et's Leanne Aguilera while promoting his upcoming film on Tuesday, and he addressed the hilarious photoshopping controversy that has gone viral over the last few days.

"Apparently it was a Canadian distributor who thought this was a great idea," Coster-Waldau, 47, said when presented with the side-by-side comparison. "Now I can finally »
Is “Game of Thrones” star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau a brother from another mother to Dwayne Johnson? It would certainly seem so, judging from a promotional image used by international distributors of Coster-Waldau’s upcoming film “Shot Caller.” The image — which is included on the Canadian DVD cover of the film, among other places — features the man who plays Jaime Lannister sporting a tough pose, a sweet ‘stache — and a look that will seem awfully familiar to fans of Johnson’s 2013 film “Snitch.” As Birth.Movies.Death news editor Scott Wampler pointed out Friday, Coster-Waldau’s stance, body and wardrobe are nearly identical to. »
