Richard Gere to Lead Oppenheimer Strategies; Jon Bernthal May Join The Accountant and Live By Night

14 November 2014 5:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Just the other day we got word that both J.K. Simmons and Anna Kendrick could possibly join the cast of Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant and now The Walking Dead’s Jon Bernthal is up for a role, too.  Or perhaps I should say The Wolf of Wall Street, Snitch or Fury’s Jon Bernthal because ever since leaving the show, he’s been doing pretty well for himself on the big screen. In addition, it’s also being reported that Richard Gere is locked to lead a film called Oppenheimer Strategies for director Joseph Cedar.  Hit the jump for more on that, The Accountant and Live By Night as well. According to Deadline, Oppenheimer Strategies focuses on a small-time operator named Norman Oppenheimer.  Three years after befriending a young politician during a low point in his life, that politician winds up becoming an influential world leader and it »

William Monahan Picks Up The Throwaways

24 September 2014 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Earlier this year screenwriter and occasional director William Monahan made a two-year first-look deal with Paramount, via his Henceforth Pictures banner. The latest possible future project to come out of it is The Throwaways, a true-crime conspiracy thriller based on a 2012 New Yorker article. The original New Yorker piece by Sarah Stillman exposed a dodgy practice in which cops were enlisting young offenders as informants, sending them off on high-risk assignments with little-to-no back-up. Sometimes the results were fatal, as in the case of Rachel Hoffman, a 23-year-old busted for weed, ecstacy and valium possession, who chose to cooperate with the police rather than face jail. Just three weeks into her assignement she was shot to death after the police lost track of her. Hers is just one story of many similar. It's ground covered recently in Ric Roman Waugh's Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson as an aggrieved and vengeful father. »

'The Calling' International Trailer Starring Susan Sarandon

15 August 2014 5:48 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After starring in the lighthearted summer comedy Tammy, Susan Sarandon takes on the thriller genre in a new international trailer for The Calling. The actress stars as Detective Inspector Hazel Micaleff in Fort Dundas, Ontario, a sleepy town where not much happens, until one day when Hazel discovers the corpse of an elderly woman who was brutally murdered.

Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace and Donald Sutherland round out an all-star cast in this thriller from director Jason Stone, in theaters August 29.

Despite a bad back, a reliance on painkillers and the occasional drink to take the edge off, Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef (Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, Best Actress, Dead Men Walking, 1995; Cloud Atlas, The Big Wedding, Snitch) leads a tranquil existence sharing a home with her elderly mother, Emily (Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn, Best Actress, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, 1974; The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream), in Fort Dundas, »

The Rock: Always The Rocksmaid, Never The Rocksgroom

22 July 2014 7:05 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

This Friday will see the release of The Rock’s (None of this Dwayne Johnson nonsense, he’s The Rock) newest action tentpole Hercules, with him playing the historic hero. You’ve probably already made up your mind if you’re going to see this film or not, you’re not anxiously waiting on the fence. You probably haven’t given a second thought to Hercules. But I have, and for the first time in a long time, I’m worried about The Rock.

When you really stop to think about it, The Rock has built a career becoming one of the most unlikely box office superstars. In 2013 Forbes named him the highest grossing actor of the year with his films that year bringing in $1.3 billion. But I say box office superstar with a caveat: He only smashes numbers when he’s part of an ensemble. Put the guy in »

13 July 2014 9:48 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

After making a dramatic take on real-life events with the financial crash-focused Margin Call and then heading out to sea for the fictional All Is Lost, writer / director J.C. Chandor appears ready to combine real-life events with watery strife, because he’s in talks to oversee Deepwater Horizon.Lionsgate / Summit and Participant Media are partnering on the film, which will revolve around people affected by the 2010 explosion on the gigantic Gulf of Mexico oil rig that spewed crude into the ocean and coated local beaches, killed 11 workers and injured 16 others.Summit began the process of developing a film based on the tragedy two years ago, scoring the rights to the New York Times article on the rig’s failure by David Barstow, David Rohde and Stephanie Saul. Snitch director Ric Roman Waugh was attached at one point, and Matthew Sand and Matthew Michael Carnahan have both worked on drafts of the script. »

J.C. Chandor is Back at Sea for 'Deepwater Horizon' Oil Spill Drama

11 July 2014 10:27 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

More than three years ago, Summit Entertainment and Participant Media were developing Deepwater Horizon, a film about the oil rig of the same name and the tragedy that followed after it exploded and unleashed massive amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making it the second largest environmental disaster in the United States. Previously, Snitch director Ric Roman Waugh was set to direct the film as we reported in 2012, but now Deadline reports it will be Margin Call and All is Lost director J.C. Chandor at the helm of the film from Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian. Based on a New York Times article titled "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hour" by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul, the story has been adapted by Matthew Sand (writer of Ninja Assassin) and chronicles the final moments leading up to the fiery disaster. The most recent draft comes from Matthew Michael Carnahan, »

Ric Roman Waugh Tackles Military Post-Traumatic Stress In New Doc

3 July 2014 3:34 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Director Ric Roman Waugh has found the rare issue that can unite Democrats and Republicans: veterans. The director of socially conscious films such as “Snitch” and “Felon” has made a documentary about veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder called,”That Which I Love Destroys Me.” Waugh tracked a pair of Special Operations soldiers for five years as they struggled with a trauma more combative than anything they faced during active duty. “This documentary is not pro-military, it's not anti-military, it's literally from the warriors’ perspective,” Waugh told TheWrap. “I don't put a face on any scandal, but tell a story form the. »

Ken Jeong Joining Kevin Hart to Make 'Ride Along 2' Even Louder

3 July 2014 2:20 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Following the recent addition of Benjamin Bratt (Miss Congeniality, Snitch) to the cast of Ride Along 2, one more name has been added to the mix, and it's a recipe for one of the loudest films we might ever see. Ice Cube and Kevin Hart are already returning in the Universal action comedy sequel with Tim Story back in the director's chair. And now Deadline reports they'll be joined by Ken Jeong, better known as Mr. Chow from The Hangover trilogy or Chang in the NBC series "Community" (which just recently avoided death again). However, at this time, with no plot details, there's no word on who Jeong will play. More below! So far all we know about the sequel is that it's supposed to take place in Miami. Sounds like the perfect place for Jeong to be crazy and loud, something he does exceedingly well, which also makes him only tolerable in small doses. »

Exclusive Media Toppers Exit, Marc Schipper Promoted

21 March 2014 4:15 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Exclusive Media toppers Nigel Sinclair and Guy East have officially departed the sales-production-finance company to form a new venture and Marc Schipper has been promoted to CEO.

The exits came seven weeks after news emerged during the European Film Market that Dasym Investment Strategies — Exclusive Media’s majority owner — had decided to restructure the company.

Sinclair, who had been co-chairman and CEO, and East, who had been co-chairman, have started White Horse Pictures and based the new banner in Beverly Hills. White Horse is taking about half a dozen features and 15 documentaries out of Exclusive Media — but will not handle foreign sales or distribution — and will also develop projects for TV and digital.

The highest-profile White Horse project is a Julius Caesar origins project with Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari on board to produce. White Horse will also continue to work with Exclusive Media on Charlize Theron’s drama “Dark Places »
