Monks - The Transatlantic Feedback (2006) -- The monks were 5 American GI's in cold war Germany who billed themselves as the anti-Beatles; they were heavy on feedback, nihilism, electrical banjo, strange haircuts, dressed in black, mocked the military and rocked harder than any other 60s band.

A fascinating story but only so-so documentary, 22 December 2007
7/10
Author: TimothyFarrell from Worcester, MA

The Monks are legendary among music geeks as the craziest out of all 60s garage rock bands. They were a group of GI's stationed together in Germany right at the start of the Vietnam conflict who decided to get together and play rock 'n' roll. Their original act consisted of surf rock and covers of rock 'n' roll standards. However, they came under management from a pair of experimental artists who came them a major makeover. In their new form as The Monks, they played the most minimalist and nihilistic art rock imaginable at the time. The lyrics went between venom against authority figures, genuine misanthropy, and downright surrealism. Of course, no one knew what to think of them at the time. However, their record gained a new life later on when people began to realize just how ahead of their time these guys were.

The documentary does only a so-so job of presenting the story. Fortunately, all the members of the band were on hand for interviews and hearing them tell their own story was a good decision. However, there's not enough cultural background presented for what made the band so special. Also, the filmmakers never explain how ahead of their time these guys were and just why there was a Monks revival decades later. The story itself is fascinating as is the archival footage on hand, but these guys deserve a better documentary. This is still worth watching however. (7/10)
