Top 10 Hollywood Actors Still In Business

16 December 2011 7:05 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Much of our lurid film community is of the belief that America’s acting prowess died with its classic stars like Marlon Brando, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly. However, I’m here to argue that America’s actors are stronger than ever and can match up toe to toe with the likes of both Europe and Asia.

The list will be split into two parts: in part one, I delve into the modern world of Hollywood actors with actresses soon to follow in part two.

Part one: Top Ten Actors Working In Hollywood Today

Actor With The Most Potential To Hit It Big: Paddy Considine

Before I begin the list, I want to take a moment to discuss an actor whom I believe has enormous potential. While not American born, British actor Paddy Considine has been in his fair share of American films like In America, »

DVD Playhouse—November 2011

By Allen Gardner

Tree Of Life (20th Century Fox) Terrence Malick’s latest effort is both the best film of 2011 and the finest work of his (arguably) mixed, but often masterly canon. A series of vignettes, mostly set in 1950s Texas, capture the memory of a man (Sean Penn) in present-day New York who looks back on his life, and his parents’ (Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain) troubled marriage, when word of his younger brother’s suicide reaches him. Almost indescribable beyond that, except to say no other film in history so perfectly evokes the magic and mystery of the human memory, which both crystalizes (and sometimes idealizes) the past. Like Stanley Kubrick’s 2001, this is a challenging, polarizing work that you must let wash over you. If you go along for the ride, you’re in for a unique, rewarding cinematic experience. Also available on Blu-ray disc. »

Clint Eastwood/Leonardo DiCaprio J. Edgar Has Okay Opening; Behind Milk: Box Office

10 November 2011 1:07 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Leonardo DiCaprio, J. Edgar Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar grossed $52,645 according to Box Office Mojo. The Warner Bros. release starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the FBI honcho and Armie Hammer as his intimate "friend" Clyde Tolson is currently screening at seven locations. The film's average was a not-too-impressive $7,571 per theater. For comparison's sake: on November 26, 2008, Gus Van Sant's Milk, another biopic about a gay figure written by J. Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, collected $268k at 34 locations, averaging $7,897 (about $9,150 today) per site. Remember that all things being equal, the lower the number of theaters, the higher the per-theater average should be. In other words, Milk had a considerably stronger first-day opening than J. Edgar. But then again, Milk opened the day before the Thanksgiving holiday; that could have made a difference. Milk, which stars Sean Penn as slain gay San Francisco politician Harvey Milk, went on »

'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Blu-ray Review

18 October 2011 5:00 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

To call Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides more of the same might be underselling it, but it would still be mostly accurate. The plot features both new and returning characters searching for the Fountain of Youth and conveniently converging on one another, but if you're a fan of the franchise you know why you're watching this film and it's damn sure not for the plot. Pirates 4 does, however, feel like a decidedly smaller film than its predecessors. That's not entirely because it's the shortest film in the franchise either. And when I say this I mean it as a positive as I found myself overwhelmed by the sheer spectacle of the prior two films. To be honest, I don't see where the $250 million production budgets for those features was spent, unless Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush substantially upped their asking price. Blu-ray Review: The Cat O’Nine Tails – Classic Giallo Tale In Disappointing Upgrade…

25 September 2011 9:46 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Graphic murders meet 70s Italian chic, in a film that exemplifies the Giallo horror genre that become so popular under the helm of director Dario Argento, amongst others. The Cat O’Nine Tails is released on Monday for the first time on Blu-ray, read on for our review…

The Cat ‘O Nine Tails, Dario Argento’s second feature as director, stars James Franciscus (Beneath the Planet of the Apes; The Valley of Gwangi), Karl Malden (On the Waterfront; A Streetcar Named Desire) and French actress and singer Catherine Spaak (Hotel, La Ronde) in a classic Giallo tale that begins when a break in at a genetics lab leads to a spiralling vortex of bloody murder. Strange circumstances surrounding the crime pique the interest of a journalist (Franciscus) and a blind crossword compiler (Malden) whose sharp ears have overheard talks of blackmail. Cat O’ Nine Tails Blu-ray Review

23 September 2011 6:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Dario Argento’s second film, following his impressive debut with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, is the somewhat formulaic Cat O’ Nine Tails, a film that Argento himself does not really care for. Argento claims in an interview included on this release that the film is “… too much like an American film” and it is very easy to see where he is coming from. Few elements in the film bring to mind Argento’s unique style and more often than not the film makes one think of generic hard boiled American 70s cop films rather than 70s Gialli. It is not entirely flawed though and there is still a lot to appreciate and enjoy across the film’s almost two hour runtime.

Cat O’ Nine Tails stars the veteran American actor Karl Malden as a blind former journalist and James Franciscus as a younger journalist. Together the two become »
