The 2008 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards

30 December 2008 1:11 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Okay, so here we are. This article will basically amount to my capstone piece for the end of 2008 as I will now hand out what amounts to the first ever RopeofSilicon Awards. My hope for future RopeofSilicon Awards is that I can figure out some kind of nominating and voting system so you, the users, can award each of these categories by nominating films throughout the year, running mini For Your Consideration campaigns in the comment section and so forth. Unfortunately, such an endeavor is outside of my capacity at the moment so you will have to deal with my opinion on each category for now, but as always I want to hear your opinion on who you would award in the comments below. After all, my opinion is just the start of things in order to get you thinking and talking, it certainly isn't the end-all/be-all of opinions. »

Cruz Urges Fans To Join Cancer Fight

22 December 2008 3:59 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Penelope Cruz wants her fans to register as bone marrow donors, after she met a young cancer sufferer during filming in London.

The Vanilla Sky star took a break from shooting movie-musical Nine to talk to eight-year-old Joe Cawse, from Kent, England.

And she was so inspired by the youngster's courage, she has urged fans to help in the fight against cancer by signing up to donate their bone marrow.

Cruz says, "He's a sunny and intelligent eight-year-old but is battling with leukaemia as I speak. One suitable donor could save his life.

"I was very surprised to discover there are two different ways to donate your bone marrow and the second way is a much easier, less invasive process than I had ever imagined. If only more people in the UK knew that there is a method of donating bone marrow that is simple and pain free."

She adds: "I urge people, please, please register. One suitable donor could save Joe's life." »

Chances Are

"Stop fidgeting!" Emma Thompson chides Dustin Hoffman, who can't seem to sit still. The energetic 71-year-old actor is in constant motion, whether looking for a pen so he can write down movie recommendations, re-enacting a pivotal scene from The Graduate, or stealing soap from the hotel bathrooms (more on that later). Hoffman takes her good-natured scolding in stride and promptly sits down next to her on the couch and behaves. It would appear that in addition to her acting and writing skills, Thompson can also direct. The duo first met on the 2006 film Stranger Than Fiction, and Thompson reveals that when she first saw her co-star, her world came to a standstill: "I thought, 'There's Dustin Hoffman. And I'm going to be working with him. How extraordinary that is.' You didn't realize how much I loved you as an actor. Or maybe you did, maybe you assumed. And rightfully so. »

The Production of 'The Reader' - Just as Interesting as the Film

18 December 2008 12:58 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Kate Winslet and David Kross in The Reader

Photo: The Weinstein Co. The Reader is one of the films this awards season that has really stuck with me. I can't exactly put my finger on the reason why, but I can't seem to get it out of my head and I have a feeling it may ultimately end up on my year-end top ten. The film has undoubtedly the best performance by Kate Winslet this year and while it didn't fair very well with critics I have a feeling it is one of those films that will get better with age. Will people give it a second chance? Considering the movie world we live in nowadays, I don't think so. However, that doesn't make the story of its production any less interesting. I kept a story by Anne Thompson at Variety open in my browser for almost a week now »

'Everything you see I owe to spa ghetti!"

This was Sophia Loren, com menting on her fabled figure, the one that molded her stardom back in the early 1950s. And she's still going strong.

It Takes a mighty powerful woman to pull a man away from Sophia Loren, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cottilard, Kate Hudson and Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, all together.

Harvey Weinstein's back in the hunt

11 December 2008 2:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

When Harvey Weinstein landed scattered awards nominations during the past few years, some -- especially Weinstein himself -- touted a comeback.

This time, it's more real.

With eight Globes noms between "The Reader" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," Harvey and Bob Weinstein scored their best post-Disney performance and bested all specialty units and mini-majors. (Miramax and Fox Searchlight had seven noms apiece.)

Now what?

Weinstein typically would capitalize on a slew of Globes nominations with aggressive campaigns and heavy spending. While the company certainly doesn't have the war chest it did at Disney or even in its early days, most believe money for this campaign won't be a concern.

"Now that Harvey is buoyed by the Globes, he's got to campaign 'The Reader' and see how far he gets," one insider said.

The company will, however, face some issues. It likely won't be able to push Kate Winslet as »

For years she was thought of as a starlet, but suddenly something has changed for Penélope Cruz, who is getting the best reviews of her career — for roles in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Isabel Coixet's Elegy, and Pedro Almodóvar's Volver, for which she became the first Spanish actor to receive an Oscar nomination. She points to her role as a destitute Albanian woman who has an affair with a married doctor in the little-seen Italian film Don't Move as the turning point."That was the year before Volver, and that movie meant a lot for me because it was a completely different character from everything that I had tried before," Cruz says. "You depend so much as an actor on a director's trust and imagination to realize that you can do something that is far away from what you have done before." In Elegy, written by »

Hollywood Money Man Kavanaugh Faces Jail For Second DUI

8 December 2008 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Movie producer Ryan Kavanaugh is facing jail this week, after he was arrested in October for driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding and driving with a suspended licence, all while still on probation for an earlier DUI charge.

The 34-year-old financier, whose Hollywood credits include Charlie Wilson's War, 3:10 to Yuma, 21 and the forthcoming musical Nine, was reportedly stopped by cops as he drove home from a film premiere in Los Angeles on 23 October.

It comes just two years after he was arrested for driving drunk in Malibu, California.

News of his arrest emerged on Friday, as it was revealed he will be arraigned at a Beverly Hills court on Friday 12 December.

A jail term could be handed out for both the second DUI charge and for violation of the probation he was placed on in 2006.

Kavanaugh's Relativity Pictures has big money deals with almost every major movie studio, including a $550 million (GBP366 million) partnership with Sony Pictures and a recently-signed $3 billion (GBP2 billion) contract with NBC Universal.

But Hollywood bosses are standing by Kavanaugh. Sony spokesperson Jim Kennedy tells the New York Times, "We do not anticipate that this will have any impact on our current business." »

Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron Here is a film that has Oscar written all over it should director Anand Tucker and his star-studded cast be able to pull it off.
