Sex & Nudity

Sex is a major theme in the film and there are many scenes throughout the film depicting sex, some are more graphic than others. None of this sexual content is erotic, but it is all very disturbing. This includes a scene where a couple is having sex and the wife yells at the man to hit her.

The film opens with a couple having sex with the male thrusting into the female's genitalia while moving within different parts of the house. This scene is in black and white and penetration shots are graphically shown up close. This is not simulated. The couple eventually reaching a bed as the male's thrusts increase in frequency. They both climax.

The woman stimulates a man's penis which is clearly visible as is the ejaculation, Please see Violence/Gore section

A woman holds scissors to her vulva, then to her clitoris, both which are depicted clearly, Please see Violence/Gore section

The woman tries to coerce her partner to have sex with her, but he declines or is incapable of complying. She runs out into the woods and is shown fully naked (her breasts and pubic area are visible although not close up) while masturbating. Her fingers are seen moving around and she appears to be imagining having sex with her husband(?).

Violence & Gore

The tone of the film is about the devil, genocide, and all that is evil.

A woman grabs a block of wood and crushes a man's testicles. The testicle crushing is not graphic. The man becomes unconscious. The woman then leans down and masturbates him and he ejaculates blood, we see this in close up. The woman drills right through his leg with a manual drill, and inserts a metal rod with a grindstone on it. This scene is very graphic and disturbing.

A woman gets a pair of scissors and cuts off her clitoris. This is graphic and we see blood run out of her.

A man hides in a hole as a woman chases him. A crow is heard cawing and the man tries to make it stop by crushing it with his fist repeatedly but fails. The woman finds him in the hole and, using a shovel, buries him alive.

An infant falls out of a window. He is seen crashing onto the ground and blood is shown from above.

A man strangles a woman in closeup. She gasps for air for about ten seconds, then dies.

A man sees a deer with its dead newborn fawn stuck to the back (the dead deer and blood are shown.)

A man finds a fox eating at his own guts. The fox stops and looks at the man and then talks to him.

Various scenes include a woman yelling very loudly at a man.

Profanity

The F-word is used once.

Bastard is said a couple times.

No alcohol, no smoking, no drug abuse.

He is seen briefly drinking a small amount of red wine from a glass.

There is talk of prescription medication, and pills are seen (but not taken).

1) The opening black-and-white scene showing the couple making love, whilst a young child falls out of a window, trying to catch snow-flakes. The youngster falls in extreme slow-motion, until it hits the pavement/sidewalk below. Though the body collapses, no detailed scenes of injury or blood are ever shown. This is unsettling and eerie however.

2) The scene in Eden, in the log cabin, when Dafoe and Gainsbourg have violent sex with each other. She takes a wooden log, and strikes his genitals, which appear to break. She then pleasures him, until he ejaculates blood over himself and her dress and face. Later, she genitally mutilates herself, by using scissors to remove her clitoris.

3) Towards the end of the above scene, she then tortures him, by drilling a hole through his left calf; fingers the bloody wound by inserting her index finger into it, and then inserting a large, heavy metal rod and weight through his ankle, before bolting the weight with a spanner, to avoid him removing it.

4) Dafoe discovers a deer with a stillborn baby; the bloody baby can be seen hanging out of the uterus. In another scene, Dafoe finds a fox eating itself. The intestines are shown and the fox tries to rip a meat piece out of itself. The fur is full of blood. and the fox talks to Dafoe. This scene is really creepy.

At the end of the film, one character is killed and the body is burned on a large open-air fire. There is no blood or gore involved.
