Storyline

DI John Rebus is a hard drinking, unkempt, womanizing police officer whose job is his whole life. He is the most senior and most experienced DI at his station. He has a mysterious past that his partner DS Siobhan Clarke learns about from time to time through various comments Rebus makes. She is a young woman who wants to succeed, but does not have much of a personal life. She feels being paired with Rebus jeopardizes her career because of his unorthodox methods, but she is also fascinated by the man and is extremely loyal. DI Rebus' boss is Chief Superintendent Templar, a woman who was one of Rebus' lovers in a distant past. Their relationship is now one where they barely tolerate each other. Written by Anonymous

Trivia

Ian Rankin confirms that Rebus was originally considered for television in the late 80s and early 90s when 'Knots and Crosses' was planned to be adapted featuring Leslie Grantham as Rebus. Rankin presumes they would have relocated Rebus to London and made the character English, but ultimately this adaptation fell through. See more »

Disappointed
12 January 2009 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

The first Rebus program was aired on our Knowledge Network tonight. I had not heard of this detective but was looking forward to watching it. I was disappointed in Rebus himself--I'm not sure how to explain it. Clarke was more like a woman who had been beaten into submission and was just there. She had no bright ideas nor any personality to spice up her role somewhat. The music was far too dramatic and loud for the puny action on the screen. I haven't read any of these detective stories. i must see what I can find in the local stores. I will then decide if I like the books better than the programs. It was nice to see Edinburgh rather than the usual English countryside. I was very impressed with some of the interiors.
