A decent but forgettable adaptation of Mr. Peabody and Sherman
19 July 2014 | by (San Antonio) – See all my reviews

Another day, another animated movie based on an old cartoon. This time around it's the tale of a genius dog who adopts a boy and they go on wacky adventures through history with their time machine. Of course, these were very short cartoons back in the day and the thought of turning it into a feature seems daunting, but for better or worse they pull it off here to turn in a decent little movie.

Good: Ty Burrell is the star here as Mr. Peabody. His voice work really shines as the intellectual and all around perfect dog who can do pretty much anything. He wasn't as big of a cynical jerk as I thought he was going to be. The rest of the cast do good. The main prop I give the movie is how it actually serves as a good history lesson in some ways. There is knowledge being given here so I appreciate the effort. I also appreciate the lack of forced pop culture references and even some welcomed jokes for adults that made me giggle. The animation looks good also.

Bad: It's still very flimsy in plot. While the driving force of the movie is the relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman is solid, the rest of the plot is very by the numbers and not emotionally resonant. It almost comes off as like a straight to DVD animated movie some of the time.

Overall, it's not perfect, but for a movie to keep the kids occupied, then you can do much worse. Besides, they get a sweet history lesson out of it
