Q. When did you first see the original 1987 RoboCop, and are you a fan ?

A. I first saw it on video. My dad rented it as soon as it came out, and then he bought me the sequel for Christmas. I’ve seen all the movies and was actually educating Michael Keaton on one the other day in which RoboCop flies…

Q. What is your take on remaking popular films?

A. I don’t believe anyone should make blanket statements on sequels or remakes, because there are some that are terrible and others that are amazing and even better than the original.

Q. Were you aware of José Padilha’s previous work before getting involved in this film?

A. Yes, »

Brazilian Film Experiments of the 1960s & Early 1970s, NYC, May 10–July 24

16 May 2014 6:24 PM, PDT | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

This should be a very worthwhile screening series that I certainly plan to investigate throughout its run. I'd say that the 2 most well-known Brazilian movie franchises outside of Brazil, are City of God and, more recently, Elite Squad (I & II) - both based on conflict between drug dealers, corrupt cops & politicians in the slums of Rio de Janeiro; both quite violent, but based on what was not that long ago, a cruel reality. And they'e also great movies that deserve to be watched, if you haven't seen them yet. The Brazilian movie industry, after decades in search of itself, seemed to explode on the international scene during the 1990s when favela-themed stories started to »

DVD Review: 'Days of Grace'

22 April 2014 2:33 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★☆☆Nominated for the Caméra d'Or prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Everardo Valerio Gout's multi-layered Mexican crime drama Days of Grace (Días de gracia) makes its way onto DVD in the UK this week after a prolonged spell in distribution purgatory. Stylishly shot on location in Mexico City over the course of three subsequent FIFA World Cups, the film follows a central triumvirate of morally obtuse individuals, each desperately trying to survive on the mean streets of this hostile concrete jungle. Gout's feature debut may owe several debts to the hugely successful Brazilian Elite Squad series, but also carries the necessary bite to match its rabid bark.

Jose Padilha To Make A Nazi-Hunting Revenge Tale

16 April 2014 2:09 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Having largely survived the trial by executive notes, critics and audiences that was making his first Hollywood film with the RoboCop remake, Jose Padilha is busy setting up potential new projects, albeit ones where he will have a little more control. He’s now picked Nekome, a post-World War II action pitch from John Hlavin, to potentially direct.Padilha’s Cold Mountain company is working with producer Eric Newman to develop the film for StudioCanal. Hlavin, who wrote Underworld Awakening and has several unproduced scripts floating around different development pools, cooked up the idea, which takes its name from the Yiddish word for revenge. The setting is the days shortly after the conflict, with two young Holocaust survivors sent to Brazil to hunt down the Nazis who ran their concentration camp.Given his experience working in his home country for the much-praised Elite Squad films, it’s not surprising to »

Netflix Greenlights ‘Narcos’, A Series About Drug Lord Pablo Escobar

2 April 2014 8:07 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Two weeks after announcing a new series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Netflix has picked up its second new series of 2015. The premium distribution platform will host Narcos, a ten-episode series about Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Narcos will star Wagner Moura as Escobar, who ruled the Colombian underworld in the late 80s and early 90s until his death in 1993. Narcos will show the worldwide influence of Escobar's Medellin Cartel. “Our idea is to tell the true story of how cocaine became such a huge problem in the U.S. and Europe – and how it all started here in Medellin,” said Jose Padilha, the series' director. Narcos will reunite Moura and Padilha, who worked together on the award-winning 2008 film Elite Squad. If that movie is any indication, we can expect Narcos to feature a frank depiction of violence and South American drug trafficking. Narcos joins Netflix's growing lineup of original series. »
