Episode 284 continues the establishment of Dr Hoffman as a new and integral character to the show. It's nice to have an outside "investigator" present in the proceedings, bringing some freshness to otherwise familiar tropes.

We've gotten several glimpses of the rather eccentric Dr. Julia Hoffman, played by the stunningly commanding Grayson Hall, one of the first Oscar nominees to have a regular role on a soap opera. She decides to visit Collinwood and encounters Maggie and David, and is taken to the old house by Maggie. Julia is intrigued by the mention of Sarah and by Josette's bedroom, and in posing as a historian sets herself up for being around for a long time.
Grayson Hall is in every scene and is a strong presence, indicating that she doesn't have a fear of anything, and you can tell she means it. Willie is mentioned but not seen, but it's clear that he will have many scenes down the road with Julia. The episode is moody and revealing, and Hall makes herself right at home. She's a great mature presence and a jolt of life among the Gothic intrigue.
