Although it takes the form of an animated feature, writer-director Eiji Han Shimizu’s True North is definitely not for kids. But as a rare glimpse inside a North Korean prison camp, this grueling and poignant true-to-life tale can make for necessary viewing, especially for anyone interested in learning more about one of the world's most blatant crimes against humanity.
Premiering in the Annecy festival’s Contrechamp sidebar, the entire selection of which has been presented online, True North can be a bit clunky in the animation department, with realistic if rudimentary 3D graphics recalling the early days of computer-generated cartoons....

“I wasn’t drowning, I was home.”
Bran Stark stands among the dead. Watching his father, uncle, and aunt at play through the power of his second sight, he is bewitched by the idea of returning to a family lost to him forever. But when he returns unwillingly to the waking world he is confronted at once with Meera’s family, with the vast emptiness of the Far North laid out where her brother used to be. What he has is an illusion; what she faces is reality. That the episode ends with another breach of the veil between life and death, the resurrection of Jon Snow at the hands of a desperate, shaky Melisandre, is an unsettling omen at the very least.
“It is beautiful under the sea,” the Raven tells Bran in the vision. “But stay there too long, and you’ll drown.” Their exchange begins the episode...

From the pulse-pounding Senna to his intimate (and button-pushing) Amy Winehouse documentary, filmmaker Asif Kapadia has developed a knack for transitioning real-life events on the silver screen with aplomb. It’s a talent that hasn’t gone unnoticed, either, and the director’s next project will pave the way for an exciting collaboration with Martin Scorsese.
Getting behind the wheel of Rolls Royce origins drama Silver Ghost, Kapadia’s next foray behind the lens will be brought to life in partnership via Sikelia Productions and Zuma Productions, with Scorsese on board to produce. First hatched back in 2012 by the late, great Richard Attenborough, Scorsese has been attached to the feature film for years, and now that Silver Ghost has landed a director, the wheels will surely creak into motion.

For his fictional narratives, Kapadia has made a habit of shooting in remote, unique locations. […]...
