Joshua Jackson is to star in the feature film adaptation of British TV series UFO, according to Variety.
The star of sci-fi show Fringe will play Paul Foster, a test pilot who joins Shado (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defence Organisation), a covert organisation built under a film studio.
Shado defends Earth against a race of aliens who have been abducting humans for their body parts.
Visual effects guru Matthew Gratzner, whose work includes The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Hancock, Iron Man and Alien: Resurrection, will direct the new big-screen version in what will be his feature film debut.
He said: "Character development is the most critical part of UFO and Joshua's terrific talent and range is exactly what I need to convey the inner conflict of the character of Paul Foster."
The series, created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, aired in 1970 and 1971. Rights for the series were optioned from ITV Global, »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long to talk about their new film, “Planet 51,” a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy.
When American astronaut Captain Charles "Chuck" Baker (Johnson) lands on Planet 51, he thinks he's the first person to step foot on it only to discover that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders...like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion "Rover" and his new friend Lem (Long), Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.
Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel and Justin Long are fabulous people and we really appreciated their time. »

Last week, Sony held a press junket at the Griffith Observatory, here in Los Angeles, to help promote their upcoming animated movie Planet 51. Since the film takes place on another planet, I think the location was perfect. Also, almost every press day is held at a hotel, and it’s great to “shake and bake” the junket format. But while the location was different, that didn’t stop Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson from making all the journalists laugh during most of their press conference. While you may be sick of Justin Long and his Mac commercials, the guy is quick on his feet when reacting to questions. I was very impressed.
Anyway, after the jump to can either read the transcript of the press conference or listen to the audio. While I always think listening to the audio is better than reading a trancript, »

Just as John Woo is back focusing on films made in his homeland with Red Cliff, action star Michelle Yeoh is returning to her roots as well, going to China to work on the "romantic kung fu thriller" Jianyi Jinaghu, which basically translates to Rain of Swords in the Martial Arts World. Or, to use a sipler term, "awesome." THR writes the plot is a pretty familiar one about gangs and blood rivalries and love-- Yeoh plays an assassin who falls in love with the grandson of a man killed by her gang. They fall in love and somehow neither figures out that the other is a trained martial artist, until the battles break out, of course. Yeoh's last few English films were largely unremarkable, including Babylon A.D and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, so who can really blame her for seeking her options elsewhere? She's a »

In my opinion Requiem for a Dream is one of those films you like, but aren't going to return to on a consistent basis primarily because doing so would lead you on your own spiral of depression. As a result, trying to decide whether you should buy it or not is a tough call and seeing how I didn't own it before receiving the Blu-ray for review doesn't make my recommendation -- one way or the other -- any easier. What I can say is after what I believe to be my third time seeing the movie, it holds up just as well as it did the first time around and this Blu-ray only makes it better. Requiem serves as a brutal look at addiction. Whether its drugs, television, sugar, or whatever vice you can think of, this film has addiction nailed to the wall and brings it to life using music, »

The creators of TV’s “Smallville,” Al Gough and Miles Millar, have signed to adapt I Am Number Four for DreamWorks and Michael Bay. The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen filmmaker is attached as a producer with the possibility of directing.
According to THR, the screenplay will be based on HarperCollins’ series of four unpublished novels (formerly six) co-written by Jobie Hughes and James Frey. You may remember the latter author as the writer outed by Oprah Winfrey when she discovered a selection for her prestigious book club was based on fabrications.
I Am Number Four is about nine teen refuge aliens who disguise themselves as high school kids on Earth. The fourth discovers an enemy alien race has discovered them after blowing up their home planet. Bay just can’t do a movie without explosions, can he?
It sounds like a perfect fit for the writers, who essentially created »

Martial Arts star and all-around master of bad-assery Jet Li will head back to Chinese filmmaking with the upcoming drama Ocean Paradise.
This film marks Li’s first Chinese project since 2007’s The Warlords from Peter Chan.
Ocean Paradise also stars Kwai Lun-mei (All About Women) and will be directed by Together With You scribe Xue Xiao-l.
Details of Ocean Paradise are still unknown. However, seeing Li tapped for a “drama” instead of high-flying actioner should give readers a double-take. The 46-year-old Wushu champion just wrapped up filming of Sylvester Stallone’s action ensemble The Expendables and was last seen in the States via The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and The Forbidden Kingdom.

"G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" has done better than what Paramount Pictures expected it to be, and thus more firm words stating a sequel project to the live-action adaptation is being developed have been uttered. According to Los Angeles Times, the studio's vice chairman, Rob Moore, has confirmed that the sequel "will soon go into development".
All of the "G.I. Joe" lead actors are contractually obligated to return for another installment. Some of whom, which included Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols, had admitted they are locked for the follow-up movie during an Australian Press Conference for the film. However, director Stephen Sommers is not.

It was a glass half-full, glass half-empty kind of weekend at the box office for Funny People, writer-director Judd Apatow's comedic meditation on fame, humor, life, and death. According to figures from Hollywood.com Box Office, it opened at the top spot with an estimated $23.4 million, better than Apatow's The 40 Year-Old Virgin ($21.4 million) -- hence, the glass is half full. But that figure is far lower than the debut for Apatow's Knocked Up ($30.7 million), and it's the worst opening for a comedy for star Adam Sander since his 2000 turkey Little Nicky -- hence, the glass is half empty. Of course, Funny People was billed more as a thoughtful dramedy than a balls-out Sandler laugh-fest, and when matched against the opening frames for Sandler's serious efforts Reign Over Me, Spanglish, and Punch-Drunk Love, Funny People is far and away the winner -- and the glass is half full again. »
