Rob Cohen to Direct Crash Bandits

13 April 2013 2:00 PM, PDT | GeekTyrant | See recent GeekTyrant news »

Now I know that you're thinking this has something to do with the video game Crash Bandicoot. But I regret to inform you it doesn't.

Rob Cohen is set to direct a film called Crash Bandits, which "centers on the rivalry between two treasure hunters who specialize in salvaging old plane wrecks. When they get a beat on the ultimate prize, they find themselves in a race against each other in the Amazon jungle."

The plot sounds like fun if not a rehash of old ideas. Cohen has a lot to his name: The Fast and the Furious, XXX, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and most recently Alex Cross

Rob Cohen to Direct Action/Adventure Film Crash Bandits

12 April 2013 1:12 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It looks like Rob Cohen is still managing to wrangle in some projects, despite having had less than stellar turnouts for his recent ventures with Alex Cross and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.  Word now comes that Cohen will direct the action/adventure film Crash Bandits.  The pic comes from a script by Michael Stokes and is being made by Nu Image/Millienium, and will tell the story of a rivalry between two competing treasure hunters.  While the premise sounds somewhat interesting and Cohen does have a history of exploring similar projects that mix the hyper-real with a streak of action and adventure, I still remain skeptical as to whether or not this is going to actually be pulled off well.  Hit the jump for more on the project. While Cohen did start out in his career stronger with the likes of The Fast and the Furious and XXX, »

"47 Ronin", inspired by ancient Japan’s story about the 'Samurai', stars Reeves as 'Kai', an outcast who joins 'Oishi'. the leader of the '47 Ronin'.

"...Together they seek vengeance on the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors..."

Production on the film started early in 2012, with the building of sets @ England's Shepperton studio sound stages and backlot, recreating 18th century Japan with a castle, fortress, tournament arena and village.

"Pinewood and Shepperton have seen some relatively big productions come through its gates in recent years, although few rival the scale and ambition of '47 Ronin', »

Variety reports that Frank Grillo and Maria Bello have signed on to star in the unmonikered supernatural thriller (previously titled House Of Horror) that Wan and Lee Clay will produce for Dimension Films. Will Canon directs from a script by Max La Bella, based on a story by Wan about a policeman and psychiatrist investigating the sole survivor of a ghost-hunting expedition in which the other five members met their deaths.
