One of the best episodes of the early years...

Warning: Spoilers
A raging thunderstorm strikes Collinswood leaving Vicky and Carolyn trapped in the dark. From out of the Shadows comes Barnabas. He tries to sooth their fears and unintendedly reveals a bit too much knowledge of the past; as he tells the tale of the tragic death of Josette Collins. The air of menace and tragedy revealed here is probably Gothic horror at its best. And the vampiric nature of Barnabas is revealed for this who could suspect it.

Kudos to the acting of Jonathan Fred. The scene is riveting every time I watch it. The follow up scenes where he mocks Vitoria and threatens her are equally chilling.

Who is the caped man?

Warning: Spoilers
Well, the audience knows but he disappears from the Evans door so fast that Victoria doesn't have the opportunity to figure it out. It's still stormy and Barnabas uses this as an excuse to tell Victoria ant Carolyn about the night of Josette's death. Jonathan Frid delivers the monologue with the power of a Shakespeare sonnet, melodramatically and poetically, showing that even a blood sucking villain can have a heart if not a soul.

Victoria questions Barnabas about the way he tells this story, as if he was there, comparing the story to Maggie's situation. It's a well written episode that doesn't advance the plot, but definitely reveals some back story that will obviously crop up again. Jason also makes an appearance, questioning Barnabas about Willie and suggesting that Barnabas get rid of him, which in Barnabas's mind could have another meaning. The episode is a bit draggy but in the case of what's going on is more than appropriate.

Exposition based

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 233 may be exposition-based, but it's still good quality. Barnabas tells a historical story about the manner of Josette's death, while Jason continues to pry into things which don't concern him.
