In his hotel room, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) discusses the sheriff's finding of "accidental death due to drowning" with a visiting Mrs. Johnson (Clarice Blackburn). Burke asks, "Who killed Bill Malloy?" Secretly planning to get her hired as housekeeper at Collinwood, they believe Malloy was murdered and hope Mrs. Johnson will be able to gather evidence against Roger Collins. Burke and Mrs. Johnson discuss Vicki's mysterious hiring as Collinwood governess. Mrs. Johnson is unaware of Vicki's origin and Burke's investigators revealed nothing. They agree to put on a public pretense of not liking each other...

Burke calls James Blair and arranges for him to contact Collins lawyers Richard and Frank Garner with an offer...

Downstairs at the hotel restaurant, Sam and Maggie have coffee. Their good mood from last evening's outing at the Blue Whale has changed considerably. Interested in breakfast and gossip, Burke and Mrs. Johnson arrive separately. Going the extra mile, Mrs. Johnson hurls an accusation at Burke in front of Sam, Maggie and David (David Henesy). Burke, who has pledged to completely take away David's inheritance and make his family homeless, smooths things over with David and tries to convince him Mrs. Johnson won't be his jailer.
