"The End of Our Happy Day"
wes-connors16 November 2011
On Widow's Hill, Matthew (Thayer David) finds Roger (Louis Edmonds) happy due to the coroner's report deciding Malloy's death was, "accidental death due to drowning." At Collinwood, Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) learns the good news from Carolyn (Nancy Barrett), who is no longer in an argumentative mood. They hope this ends Burke's suspicions, but doubts are shared. Although Carolyn doesn't explicitly apologize, it seems the quarreling between the young women has ended. Vicki decides to go for a walk on the beach, and Carolyn suggests Lookout Point, coincidently the place where Malloy likely died...

Coming home, Roger finds Carolyn asking about the silver fountain pen he was supposed to return to Burke the night Malloy died. Carolyn has spoken to Burke and he does not have the pen. Roger thinks he must have misplaced the pen. The rare pen was purchased in South America. While they look around the house, Vicki finds a silver fountain pen mixed with some seaweed on the beach. Unfortunately, the hairstyle and clothing Vicki wears at Collinwood and in some recycled location footage does not match the hairstyle or clothing she wears on the beach. Of course, she could have a changing room at Matthew's cottage, but... Back at Collinwood, Roger is rattled by a knock on the door...

Nice bonding between Uncle Roger and Carolyn, but not much else....

Warning: Spoilers
Roger is nervous when Carolyn brings up Burke's missing pen, having spent a good deal of this and the previous episode boasting about how pleased he was how things went in the Bill Malloy death investigation. This marks a reappearance of Thayer David as groundskeeper Matthew Morgan, as cantankerous as ever, but not as dangerous. This is more an episode for Roger and Carolyn than anything else, necessary filler that was needed to pad out detail to keep people in tune for the following episode, giving an indication that the missing pen will be a necessary plot point in upcoming episodes. Carolyn's cheeriness and her blunt demeanor does put some fish in Uncle Roger's cake, bringing his smugness to an end, a necessary switch of moods, and the highlight of this quite editable episode that could be cut down to five minutes without the viewer missing any pertinent information.

Too much crowing
Leofwine_draca18 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 75 is one of the least yet. Most of it features Roger still crowing about the coroner's report which has exonerated him of any suspicion regarding Malloy's death. Matthew, the handyman, is more cautious. Meanwhile, there's a new physical clue in the form of a missing-and-discovered fountain pen which replaces the car valve earlier in the series.
