There's a bonding here that begins to grow strangely between Victoria and David, and the introduction of the old house, never mentioned but seen by me in a shadow over the opening credit that showed the newer Collinwood. There seems to be some kind of haunted palace morphing over the 130 year old Collinwood, looking like the shell of Mandalay in "Rebecca". but I know now that was a figure of my imagination, and that's the point of "Dark Shadows". Nothing is ever what it seems to be.
"You forget my dear, I have all of David's ghosts", Elizabeth tell Carolyn when she suggests that Elizabeth hire a housekeeper. Carolyn suggests Mrs. Johnson, not realizing that she's playing into Burke's plotting, and Elizabeth's feelings about the late Bill Malloy fall into play as a part of her decision. But the real prize in this episode is the introduction of the old house, like David showing Victoria, previously his enemy, his prize secret possession. this introduces the ghost of Josette Collins, soon to become a very important figure in the "Dark Shadows" plot. This is the first episode that I mark as nearly excellent since the very first week of the show.
